A bromance no more: President Donald Trump and Elon Musk's split has erupted into a feud. The NBA Finals tip off. And WorldPride's main events kick off this weekend in D.C.! |
👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. It's a busy Thursday! But don't worry, I brought you the news! |
But first: The OG Birkin. 👜 Jane Birkin's original Hermès bag, designed and named after the British actress and singer, is going up for auction. | President Donald Trump's bromance with billionaire Elon Musk appears to be unraveling after the world's richest man trashed the president's "big, beautiful bill" and urged lawmakers to vote against it. Trump told reporters Thursday in the Oval Office that he was "disappointed" in Musk. The two later took their feud online – Trump on Truth Social and Musk on X. 👉 What to know about the Trump-Musk fall out. |
Travel ban 2.0: Trump also brought back a controversial policy from his first term: a travel ban. On Wednesday, he issued a full travel ban on the entry of foreign nationals from 12 countries into the United States. The ban will take effect effect June 9. In a proclamation announcing the move, Trump cited "national security risks" posed by citizens of the targeted nations. The restrictions do not apply to people who already have valid visas, lawful permanent residents, certain athletes (such as those attending the Olympics or FIFA World Cup), or immediate family members of current visa holders. 👉 See what countries are part of the order. | President Donald Trump and Elon Musk attend a press conference in the Oval Office of the White House on May 30. Nathan Howard, REUTERS | As part of a flurry of rulings Thursday, the Supreme Court agreed that a worker faced a higher hurdle to sue her employer as a straight woman than if she had been gay − a move that could trigger a wave of "reverse discrimination" lawsuits amid a national backlash against diversity, equity and inclusion programs. The justices unanimously rejected a lower court's ruling that Marlean Ames could not sue the Ohio Department of Youth Services because she had failed to provide "background circumstances" showing the department was "that unusual employer who discriminates against the majority." The Supreme Court's decision doesn't settle Ames' discrimination claim but revives it for additional court proceedings. 👉 What to know about the case. | Thursday was a busy day at the U.S. Supreme Court. The series kicks off in Oklahoma City, marking the beginning of a promising showdown. Both teams are chasing history: For the Pacers, it would be their first NBA championship. For the Thunder, it would mark their first title in Oklahoma City − the franchise last won in 1979 as the Seattle SuperSonics. 🏀 See where the odds stand. | The Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander drives past the Indiana Pacers' Andrew Nembhard on Dec 26, 2024, at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. A new sense of urgency at DC's WorldPride | A block party honoring the District of Columbia's "Gayborhood." A two-day music festival headlined by pop stars Jennifer Lopez and Troye Sivan. And, of course, a March on Washington-style rally. WorldPride, which began May 17, culminates this weekend in Washington with the city's Pride Parade on Saturday and a massive rally and march from the Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capitol on Sunday. The global festival, which promotes LGBTQ+ visibility and awareness, comes at a historic juncture − as LGBTQ+ rights face increasing hostility and the White House targets the community. 🏳️🌈 How advocates are fighting back. | A Pride flag-raising event helps kick off Pride Month in Washington, D.C., at the John A.
