While this isn't the first military parade in the United States and in the nation's capital, reactions have been mixed: some predict a stirring moment of patriotism while others see it as an alarming echo of authoritarianism. • | Amid the military celebration, liberal and pro-democracy groups have declared a "No Kings" day of protests, with about 2,000 anti-Trump demonstrations planned in communities across the nation except for Washington D.C. Organizers for the rallies said it is more important than ever to have a "national day of peaceful protest" on Saturday following the decision by Trump to send in Marines and the National Guard to Los Angeles following isolated protests. What organizers expect for the protests. | • | There are still some protesters from other organizations who will continue with their plans in D.C. on Saturday, despite Trump declaring that protesters would be "met with very big force." Well, he doesn't feel like royalty, he told reporters. "I don't feel like a king. I have to go through hell to get stuff approved," he said. The Secret Service office earlier this week previewed what attendees should expect for the event, including metal detectors scanning anyone entering the area for weapons. U.S. Senator handcuffed and removed from DHS secretary presser | Sen. Alex Padilla, a Democrat from California, was forcibly removed and handcuffed during a press conference by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. He was not arrested or detained, Padilla said shortly after the scuffle in Los Angeles. Padilla, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump's immigration policies, said during a press conference that he had a question for Noem on the administration's immigration enforcement actions. Isolated protests against immigration raids have sprung up in areas of Los Angeles, leading Trump to deploy the National Guard and hundreds of Marines. Noem in an interview on Fox News after the incident said that she, nor her staff, knew who Padilla was until after he identified himself as a U.S. senator.
