Clare Mulroy Books Reporter

Happy Thursday, booklovers! It's been a big week for books – for starters, there's a new Taylor Jenkins Reid out (read our conversation with the "Atmosphere" author here).

Plus, former President Bill Clinton and bestselling author James Patterson have a new thriller out and I've got a behind-the-scenes glimpse into our recent sit-down interview for you.

Former President Bill Clinton and bestselling author James Patterson talk books with USA TODAY's reporter and visual team of Steven Vieira, Clare Mulroy and Nathanial Gary.

Nathanial Gary

Clinton and Patterson teamed up for their third political crime thriller, "The First Gentleman," which follows the president's husband, who is on trial for murder, and the two journalists determined to uncover the truth about the former professional football player turned political spouse. The accusation against him also threatens to upend the carefully crafted economic "Grand Bargain" his commander-in-chief wife is nearly ready to announce.

Just days before the duo published "The First Gentleman," I headed to White Plains, New York to chat with them. We brought a camera crew, tested our angles, were briefed by Secret Service and met representatives from the Clinton Foundation and the publishing team at Little, Brown and Company. In the extensive interview, Clinton told me about how the runs he went on during his White House days influenced the protagonist. Patterson revealed the presidential details drawn from real life that surprised him most.
