Hello! Rebecca Morin here. It's a hot day here in Washington D.C… and it looks like it's going to stay that way for the next few days.

Iran fires at US base in Qatar

Iran launched missiles against a United States military base in Qatar. The move comes after Tehran threatened to retaliate against the U.S. for strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend. The White House and the Department of Defense are aware of, and closely monitoring, potential threats to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a senior White House official not authorized to speak publicly told USA TODAY. The strikes are part of an operation against a the U.S. base in Qatar, Iran state TV has reported, according to CNN. With 40,000 troops in the Middle East, the Pentagon has been bracing for a counterattack by sending an additional aircraft carrier strike group to the region and bolstering air defenses to protect troops in recent weeks following Israel's ongoing attacks on Iran. The latest updates after the U.S. bombed Iran.

At the White House: Trump's public schedule had him meeting in the Oval Office with his national security team at 1 p.m. The meeting came after the president raised the prospect of an Iranian "regime change" in a statement on his social media platform Truth Social.

Will Iran strike back? Iran supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said his country will respond to the United States' historic military strikes. But when and how is the big question. Brett McGurk, who was the Biden administration coordinator for the Middle East, said in an interview on CNN the response could include "missiles, militias and acts of hostage-taking."

GOP infighting: MAGA leader Steve Bannon said the news of the bombing was not what "MAGA wanted to hear." Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who campaigned heavily for Trump, said she disagreed with the bombing. But some Republicans are rallying around the president after the Iran strike – from Trump's former Vice President Mike Pence to a slew of congressional leaders and MAGA figures such as Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Tensions are rising among conservatives over the U.S. strikes.

Protests erupt against conflict: Protests against the U.S. military involvement in Iran erupted Sunday in New York and outside the White House. And more are expected to continue throughout the weeks in communities across the nation. The protests, some of them organized in part by the ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition, an anti-war group, call for Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop the conflict with Iran. What to know about the protests.

What's happening with the man mistakenly deported by Trump?

A federal judge in Tennessee has ruled that Kilmar Abrego Garcia must be released from jail while he awaits trial on human smuggling charges. U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes ruled in Nashville on Sunday that Abrego Garcia, 29, cannot remain in detention, denying the federal government's request. The judge set a Wednesday hearing in Nashville to determine the conditions of Abrego Garcia's release. Abrego Garcia, who was thrust into the national spotlight when the Trump administration mistakenly deported him to El Salvador in March in violation of a court order, has pleaded not guilty to charges he transported undocumented immigrants for financial gain. What to know about the case.
