Suspect in Minnesota shooting charged | It was a two-day manhunt. The suspect accused of fatally shooting a Minnesota state lawmaker and wounding another was charged with multiple counts of murder after authorities took him into custody on Sunday night. Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was arrested in rural Sibley County, about 50 miles away from Minneapolis, after he surrendered to law enforcement in a wooded area near his home. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called the attacks a "politically motivated assassination." Police say Boelter posed as a law enforcement officer on Saturday and fatally shot state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in their home. He also allegedly shot and wounded state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at their home. Boelter is scheduled to make a court appearance on Monday afternoon. Boelter is also facing federal murder charges. |
The attacks on the state lawmakers, both of whom were part of Minnesota's Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, came on the same day as the nationwide "No Kings Day" demonstrations. Boelter had a hit list of lawmakers and other officials, such as Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, also a Democrat, as well as a sheaf of papers labeled "No Kings" in the back of his car. Authorities said it appeared Boelter targeted legislators who are abortion rights supporters, based on writings he left behind. | President Donald Trump on Saturday condemned the attack as "horrific." News of the shooting came as the president was celebrating the Army's 250th birthday (as well as his 79th birthday), in Washington D.C. At the same time, millions of Americans in about 2,000 communities turned out to object to Trump and his assertion of unprecedented presidential powers that opponents say violate the Constitution. | A memorial sits outside the Minnesota State Capitol in honor of murdered Democratic state assemblywoman Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Sunday. Israel-Iran conflict top focus at G7 | The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran will be front-and-center at the G7 summit being held in Canada. While he's often been a disruptor at global gatherings, President Trump could use his time in Canada to unite his international colleagues behind solutions in the Middle East. The missile exchanges in the Middle East will naturally take up a larger portion of the G7 discussion, instead of other issues like global finances or security concerns about China and Russia. What to know about the summit. | Move over T-Mobile.
