One of the biggest nights in fashion has arrived. President Donald Trump wants to reopen an infamous prison. And don't forget to thank a teacher this week! |
👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. It's the start of a new week! Here's Monday's news to kick it off. |
But first: I'm so hungry I could eat … Watch the funniest reactions after social media users prank their loved ones by mentioning names from their past in the "I'm so hungry" trend. | It's quite possibly the biggest night in fashion: The Met Gala. This year's dress code is "Tailored for You," while the theme is "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." Celebrity attendees and their high-fashion ateliers will be tasked with reimagining the Black "dandy," defined as a "man unduly devoted to style," for their gala attire. It's going to be a night celebrating Black excellence and trailblazing Black fashion. Get ready to be gagged by all the fashion dos and gasp at all the fashion don'ts. 🎩 See all the latest from the red carpet and beyond. | Teyana Taylor attends the 2025 Met Gala Celebrating "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" at Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday in New York City. Trump wants to bring back Alcatraz | From "Escape From Alcatraz" to "The Rock" to "X Men: The Last Stand," the infamous Alcatraz prison has been featured in dozens of films. It's also one of San Francisco's most popular tourist sites. Now, President Donald Trump wants to make it a prison once again. Trump on April 4 said he wants to reopen Alcatraz, which is located on a 22-acre island in San Francisco Bay. The former federal penitentiary closed down more than 60 years ago due to how expensive it was to operate. |
Reopening The Rock? Trump isn't the first to consider reopening the prison, which closed in 1963. The Reagan Administration in 1981 evaluated Alcatraz Island to hold 10,000 to 20,000 Cuban detainees during the Mariel Boatlift. However, it was rejected because of its lack of utilities, historic nature and popularity as a tourist destination. 👉 What to know about Alcatraz. | An aerial view shows Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, California on May 16, 2024. Jury selection for Diddy trial underway | Sean "Diddy" Combs' criminal trial in Manhattan kicked off on April 5. And first up? Selecting the jury. As many as 150 potential jurors were questioned one by one by Judge Arun Subramanian, the prosecution and the defense to determine whether they're qualified to serve on Combs' jury. The goal is to get through all potential jurors in three days; the judge will choose 45 potential jurors who are qualified to serve through his interview process. The jury will be anonymous. Prospective jurors were asked a wide array of questions – from whether they were or their loved ones are sexual assault survivors to whether they had heard news about allegations against the hip-hop star. 👉 Potential jurors given list of celebrities connected to Diddy. | District Judge Arun Subramanian interviews potential jurors as Sean "Diddy" Combs sits with his legal team, at the start of his sex trafficking trial in New York City on Monday in this courtroom sketch. A giant red apple for teachers | My love of the arts – reading, writing and even performing (though it's been a while since I've done that) – probably started in the second grade with the introduction of Shel Silverstein. That was thanks to my then-teacher, Mrs. Infante. It's National Teacher Appreciation Week, a week to honor the hard work that teachers put in to educate and inspire students across the nation! The week was established by the National Parent Teacher Association in 1984, designating a week in May to honor teachers, who in surveys have frequently said their jobs can be stressful and overwhelming. 🍎 See this week's deals and discounts for educators. |
