Clare Mulroy Books Reporter

Happy Thursday booklovers! This is Clare Mulroy, USA TODAY's Books Reporter, here to give you a weekly snapshot of the biggest news in books and a few recommendations to keep your TBR satisfied.

We're just over halfway through Season 2 of "The Last of Us" – how are you feeling? Personally, as someone who never played the game, that Episode 2 death still has me reeling. What better way to drown our sorrows than a few books that keep the fun(gi) vibes going?

If you enjoy the post-apocalyptic survival and community aspects of "The Last of Us," try "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel, which follows a troupe of traveling Shakespeare performers 15 years after a pandemic decimated most of humanity. I guarantee you won't be able to put it down.

If you love Joel and Ellie's cross-country journey, try "Parable of the Sower" by Octavia E. Butler, a classic dystopian often heralded as "prophetic." It follows a young girl with a debilitating form of hyperempathy with a new vision for humanity that extends beyond mere survival.

Or, if you want to delve deeper into the unknown overgrowth, read "Annihilation" by Jeff VanderMeer, which follows a group of four women on an expedition to map and observe a desolate and dangerous island.

What are your favorite post-apocalyptic books? Shoot me a line at cmulroy@usatoday.com. Thanks for keeping up with USA TODAY Books this week, and happy reading!
