Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' stalls

The status of President Donald Trump 's massive tax and policy bill? Let's just say there isn't the unanimous support the president called for just yesterday. Progress on the bill stalled after ultraconservative members of the House Freedom Caucus demanded further changes, including tax cuts, sweeping changes to Medicaid and food benefits, border security, defense funding and more. Those GOP lawmakers are also concerned about the more than $3.3 trillion the package will add to the deficit. The move comes after Trump met with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, where he told lawmakers to stop negotiating and just pass the bill. On Wednesday morning, Trump told reporters that his bill is doing "very well" and that "it's very close." What to know about the negotiations.

The massive bill is expected to help the wealthiest Americans while diminishing resources for the poorest, according to a preliminary analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The CBO said that due to cuts in Medicaid and SNAP, resources would decrease by about 2% by 2027 for families in the poorest 10% and increase for people in the highest tenth of the income distribution.
In addition to high-income earners, families with children, car buyers, waiters and workers who get tips and those with overtime pay will benefit most from the bill as it stands now.
While drama stirs on Capitol Hill, a tense meeting is expected at the White House. Trump is meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House today. The president is expected to discuss his concerns about South Africa's White minority.

DOJ abandons police reform settlements over deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor

The deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor sparked worldwide outrage in 2020 after the two were separately killed during police encounters. Now, the Justice Department is dropping negotiations for court-approved settlements with Minneapolis and Louisville police agencies, despite previously finding that authorities routinely violated the civil rights of Black people. In addition, Federal authorities are also closing investigations and retracting findings of wrongdoing against police departments in Phoenix, Arizona, Memphis, Tennessee, Trenton, New Jersey, Mount Vernon, New York, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and the Louisiana State Police. Why negotiations are being dropped.

Tariff war: Walmart vs. Trump

President Donald Trump is watching Walmart. The president over the weekend blasted Walmart on social media, accusing the company of unfairly blaming his tariffs for their expected price increases and ordering the world's largest retailer to "eat the tariffs" and not pass the import costs on to consumers. Walmart in a statement to USA TODAY said the company will "keep prices as low as we can for as long as we can." The tit-for-tat between the two came after Walmart said it would soon have to increase prices for shoppers due to higher tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, according to earnings calls. When prices are expected to increase.
