President Trump's tariffs cause turmoil among the markets and U.S. allies. Devastating flooding and storms bring death and destruction. And I have the perfect suggestion to calm your growling stomach. |
👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. A big thanks to my colleague Nicole Fallert for holding down the newsletter yesterday! Now, on to Thursday's news. |
The stock market sank. Some U.S. allies want retribution. And there was even bipartisan backlash on Capitol Hill. President Donald Trump's new sweeping tariff program, where he hit almost 185 countries with at least 10% levies, is causing an uproar at home and abroad as the president hopes to spur American manufacturing. 👉 Follow today's updates. |
What happened with stocks? U.S. stocks plunged on Thursday in the wake of Trump's announcement, with major indexes recording big declines. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost nearly 1,700 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq saw their biggest losses since 2020. 👉 See where the market stands. |
Global upset: World leaders – from the European Union and Australia to China – expressed frustration and betrayal. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said the EU was "prepared to respond" to Trump's sweeping new levies but did not immediately announce countermeasures. 👉 What trading partners said. | Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange during morning trading on April 03, 2025 in New York City. National security shake up | Looks like some in the Trump administration didn't pass the loyalty test. Trump on Thursday fired at least three senior officials on the National Security Council. A fourth person, who worked for Secretary of State Marco Rubio when he was in the U.S. Senate, was also fired. The moves come after far-right activist Laura Loomer visited Trump and presented the president with research on administration officials she suspects of insufficient loyalty to his agenda. 👉 See who was fired. |
Rainfall and tornadoes cause devastation |
Following devastating tornadoes, rain and flooding across the central United States, at least seven are dead and tens of thousands are without power. The National Weather Service said that "catastrophic" and "potentially historic heavy rainfall" is expected to keep falling over the coming days. |
Where to expect weather disruptions: Over 30 million people from Texas to Ohio and West Virginia were still at risk Thursday of powerful tornadoes and major flooding. Parts of the South, such as Memphis and Nashville in Tennessee and Little Rock in Arkansas, are at the greatest risk for severe storms that could have large hail and damaging winds, as well as possible tornadoes. 👉 What to know about the storms. | Samuel Russell, with Metro Parks, puts up cation tape around the railings of the riverfront due to flooding in Nashville, Tenn., Thursday, April 3, 2025. Wrap up your day with this popular food | I got your dinner plans sorted out for you: burritos. It's National Burrito Day – a day to celebrate the tasty tortilla wrap packed with your chosen ingredients. Truth be told, despite growing up along the U.S.-Mexico border, I never had a burrito until I went to college in Iowa. But where did this dish come from? The burrito likely originated from the co-mingling of foods in Mexico with that of Europeans, who arrived after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. 🌯 Check out today's burrito deals and freebies. | La Fonda St. owner Robert Encarnacion assembles a burrito at his restaurant in Detroit on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
