Six people died in a tragic helicopter crash in New York City. The tariff pause might not bring you much relief. And a strange police shooting in LA involving a bestselling author. |
👋 Howdy! Rebecca Morin here. It's Thursday, Thursday. Let's get to the news on Thursday. |
A deadly helicopter crash in New York | A helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York City on Thursday afternoon, killing all six people on board. Officials said the victims were five members of a family from Spain ‒ two adults and three children ‒ and the pilot. Video footage from local media showed rescue boats surrounding the overturned Bell 206 helicopter, which crashed at approximately 3:30 p.m. The helicopter was ferrying the family on a "flightseeing" tour of New York City, a popular way to see landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building and Wall Street. 👉 Follow the latest updates. | Rescue workers and emergency personnel work at the scene of a helicopter crash on the Hudson River near lower Manhattan in New York, U.S., April 10, 2025. What the tariff pause really means | President Donald Trump may have issued a 90-day pause on some of his most aggressive tariffs, but that doesn't mean you should stop worrying, economists say. A universal 10% tariff on all imports remains in place, and tariffs on goods from China total 145% – the 125% tariffs that the president announced Wednesday on top of the previously imposed 20% tariffs on Chinese goods. In response, China is setting tariffs of 84% on all U.S. products. |
What does it mean for your wallet? Prices on goods like cell phones, clothing and cars will still see a price increase, said Mark Zandi, chief economist for financial services company Moody's Analytics. Zandi also warns there will be "more bad days in the stock market." 💸 See how much the tariffs could cost you. |
A police shooting – with a bestselling author? |
Jillian Shriner, a bestselling author and wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, faces an attempted murder charge after an altercation in her own Los Angeles backyard in which she was shot by police. |
What happened? Police officers who were searching for suspects connected to a hit-and-run tracked one suspect to the backyard of a house and "observed a female, later identified as 51-year-old Jillian Shriner, in the yard of a neighboring residence armed with a handgun." Police said Shriner was shot after she refused multiple orders to drop her gun and "pointed the handgun at the officers." 👉 What we know about the incident. | Jillian Shriner, right, with Scott Shriner at the PEN America 2018 LitFest Gala in Beverly Hills, California. Director ordered to pay $1.68 billion in sexual assault trial | Film director James Toback has been ordered to pay $1.68 billion in damages after a jury found him liable in a sexual assault trial in New York during which he was accused by 40 women of sex crimes over decades. Toback, the screenwriter behind films like "Bugsy" and "Two Girls and a Guy," was one of the first major Hollywood names to be thrown out during the #MeToo reckoning over sexual violence in the entertainment industry nearly a decade ago. Stars including Rachel McAdams, Selma Blair and Julianne Moore accused him of on-set harassment. 👉 More on the allegations against Toback. | James Toback speaks at the Television Critics Association Cable TV Summer press tour in Beverly Hills, California, on July 25, 2013.
