President Donald Trump holds his first joint address to Congress of his second term. But Trump's trade war might overshadow his speech. And guess what? Bad winter weather persists. |
👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. I've got a surprise for you. It's Tuesday's news! |
Trump set to defend his agenda | After a whirlwind first six weeks of his second term, President Donald Trump will give a full-throated defense of his actions in his first joint address to Congress since returning to the White House. Trump has signed a flurry of executive orders that lay the groundwork to crack down on immigration and has led an aggressive push to dismantle large parts of the federal government. Still, there's one issue that will be hanging over the speech: Americans' continued economic concerns. Trump also will be looking out into the chamber at the faces of some of the people who were casualties of his mass government layoffs. 👉 Follow today's coverage. | President Donald Trump heads to the Capitol tonight for his first joint address to Congress since returning to the White House. Welcome to Trump's trade war – and get ready for high(er) prices | Trump's speech comes amid an escalating trade war with the nation's key partners. Trump on Tuesday imposed 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, as well as an additional 10% tariff on China. He initially paused the tariffs on the United States' two neighbors last month in exchange for agreements to address border security. He put in place a 10% tariff on China last month as well. |
How are the countries responding? China, Mexico and Canada have said they will hit the U.S. with their own tariffs. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there will be an immediate 25% tariff on $20.7 billion worth of U.S. imports, which could target American beer, wine, bourbon, home appliances and Florida orange juice. China said it would impose 10% to 15% tariffs on some U.S. agricultural product imports. And Mexico said it will announce its own retaliatory tariffs on Sunday. 👉 Why it's sparking recession fears | Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum holds a press conference at the National Palace in Mexico City, Mexico, on Tuesday to announce a response to U.S. tariffs. Winter storm brings severe weather |
It might be wishful thinking, but fingers crossed that the crazy weather dies down soon. A massive winter storm brought heavy winds, rain and snow across the country Tuesday, causing travel disruptions, knocking out power and even interrupting Mardi Gras events in New Orleans. |
Up to 20 states see storms: Hurricane-force winds caused widespread power outages throughout northeastern Texas and southeastern Oklahoma. In Minnesota and Nebraska, forecasters warned of heavy snowfall that could cause whiteout conditions. A low-pressure system is expected to spread as far south as Florida to as far north as Pennsylvania and New Jersey. ⛈️ See which states have weather warnings. | Storm damage is shown in Ada, Oklahoma, on Tuesday after a severe thunderstorms and an EF-1 tornado moved through the area. Man do I wish I had some beignets, or maybe I'll have to settle for a doughnut. It's Fat Tuesday – also known as Mardi Gras. The holiday is the day before Ash Wednesday, which kicks off the 40-day Lenten season that leads to Easter. Strong winds and risks of possible tornadoes put a damper on some of the festivities in New Orleans, but many still hit the street for one of the city's most famous celebrations. 🎉 Look back at New Orleans' parade | A reveler shows off her costume at the Krewe of Zulu Mardi Gras parade Tuesday in New Orleans.
