President Donald Trump walked back tariff hike on Canadian steel and aluminum. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the world five years ago today. And what are those flocks in the sky? |
👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. Would you look at that? I got Tuesday's news for you. |
Trump's tariff tit for tat with Canada | President Donald Trump on Tuesday escalated a trade war with Canada - and then walked it back. Trump said he would double tariffs set to be enacted Wednesday on steel and aluminum, raising them from 25% to 50%. Hours later, Canada folded. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the country was suspending a 25% electricity surcharge on U.S. energy users. As a result, the president said he would no longer enact the additional hike to the set tariffs. 👉 Follow today's updates. | People walk past the Nasdaq market site as U.S. stock markets opened Tuesday in New York City on Tuesday. COVID-19, half a decade later | Five years ago today, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic. It feels like another life. Do you remember wiping down groceries after every trip? I know I do. At the time, 118,000 cases and 4,291 deaths related to the virus had been reported in 114 countries. Now, more than 7 million people have died from the virus globally, including more than 1.2 million in the United States. |
What happened that day? March 11, 2020, was a big news day. Tom Hanks announced he had tested positive for the virus. The NBA suspended its 2019-20 season. Trump announced a travel ban in the United States. 👉 Key moments from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. | Volunteers place 200,000 American flags to memorialize deaths due to COVID-19 on the National Mall on Sept. 21, 2020. Missing college student's family wants authorities to expand search | The father of Sudiksha Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student who has been missing since Thursday in the Dominican Republic, is urging authorities to consider "multiple options" in the search for the 20-year-old. Authorities have failed to find her body in the water off the resort town of Punta Cana, where she was last seen. Subbarayudu Konanki, the college student's father, wants authorities to pivot from the assumption that she drowned and consider the possibility of kidnapping or abduction. Konanki was on a spring break trip with five friends and was last seen on a beach with a man who has given conflicting reports about when he last saw her. 👉 What we know about Sudkisha Konanki's disappearance. |
A sign that warmer weather is coming? | Is it Superman? Maybe it's a plane. Nope, it's birds. Millions of birds are making their way back north for their annual spring migration. Peak spring bird migration began March 1 and runs through June 15, though some species migrate earlier or later. Around 450 million to 500 million birds could be seen on a big night in the spring, said Andrew Farnsworth, a migration ecologist at Cornell University. | A large flock of snow geese takes flight from a pasture in Sacramento County, Calif., on Feb. 4, 2025.
