President Donald Trump defends recent deportations of Venezuelan nationals. Are you ready for March Madness? Communities across the nation were cleaning up after deadly weekend tornadoes and wildfires. |
👋 Hi all! Rebecca Morin here. Happy St. Patrick's Day! I brought you some gold: Monday's news. |
Trump's deportation showdown | President Donald Trump over the weekend deported nearly 300 Venezuelans to El Salvador, in apparent defiance of court orders and making way for a legal – and political – showdown. The Trump administration invoked the seldom-used 1798 Alien Enemies Act to immediately deport the Venezuelans who they say are members of a controversial gang called Tren de Aragua without due process. |
Why El Salvador? White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Trump administration paid El Salvador $6 million to accept 261 alleged Venezuelan gang members to the Central American country's mega prison known as CECOT, the Terrorism Confinement Center. Leavitt said the sum of money is "pennies on the dollar" compared to the cost of housing the deported Venezuelans in maximum security prisons in the U.S. 👉 Follow today's updates. | Salvadoran police officers escort alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua recently deported by the U.S. government to be imprisoned in the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) prison, at the El Salvador International Airport in San Luis Talpa, El Salvador, in this handout image obtained Sunday. Weekend weather turns deadly |
At least 42 people have died after a violent storm swept the nation over the weekend, causing more than 50 tornadoes and fanning wildfires across multiple states. Large portions of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa were still at risk for extreme or critical fire weather Monday. |
Wildfires and tornadoes strike several states: Field crews from weather service offices across the central and eastern U.S. have been surveying the damage across seven states after 300 houses and structures were destroyed by wildfires. In Missouri, an EF-3 tornado killed at least a dozen people. Cave City, Arkansas, also saw an EF-3 tornado on Friday. 👉 Follow today's weather updates. | Storm damage is seen in Plantersville, Alabama, on Sunday after an overnight tornado hit the area. The holiday, which began by celebrating the patron saint of Ireland, has come now to be a festive day to celebrate everything Irish. Across the United States, countless cities celebrate by holding green adorned parades, with Irish foods, and of course, thematic bar crawls. I know I'll be celebrating St. Patty's Day by watching a movie with my favorite Irish actor, Ayo Edebiri.
