Deaths of Gene Hackman, wife labeled 'suspicious'

Academy Award-winning actor Gene Hackman, his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and one of their dogs were found dead Wednesday at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A search warrant released Thursday has described their deaths as "suspicious." Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 63, were found in separate rooms of their sprawling home. 👉 Details of the search warrant.

Remembering Hackman: A two-time Oscar-winner, Hackman brought a rogue charm and everyman believability to iconic roles such as Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle in "The French Connection." His trademark laugh was often brought into his villain roles, like the gleeful megalomaniac Lex Luthor in the "Superman" franchise. 👉 Why he stepped away from acting.

Trump's tariff threats

President Donald Trump isn't turning away from tariffs. Trump said Thursday that his proposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico will take effect Tuesday. The tariffs were paused this month in exchange for agreements to address border security, but Trump said he wasn't satisfied with the progress. He also has placed an additional 10% tariff on top of existing tariffs he had already announced on Chinese imports. 👉 Why Trump uses tariffs as a policy strategy.

EU gets hit, too: Trump also said this week that he was going to hit the European Union with 25% tariffs, criticizing the union for not accepting many U.S. exports like cars and agricultural products. He did not say when the tariffs would go into effect. 👉 Trump said EU was formed to 'screw' the US.

Ready, set, don't spend

Does money talk? Or should I say, does not spending money talk? Several groups of activists and consumers plan a 24-hour "economic blackout" Friday, one in a series of boycotts to protest "corporate greed" and the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives by companies and the Trump administration. Organizers are encouraging people to not spend any money anywhere for one day or to buy from local businesses if they do have to spend money. 💸 What other boycotts are happening.
