The pesky groundhog was right

A major ice storm is set to hit the Midwest and Northeast this week. An ice storm set to blanket the Midwest and Northeast. A presidential presence at the Super Bowl. And a woman who might be changing the future of medical transplants.

But first: Save the hippos? 🦛 There are no wild hippos in the U.S., but the Fish and Wildlife Service is still trying to determine whether to add them to the endangered species list.

Ice, ice baby

I really wish the groundhog wasn't right, but winter isn't over just yet. Forecasters said Monday that a major ice storm will span the Midwest to the Great Lakes starting Wednesday, then continue to the Northeast on Thursday. Several cities in Pennsylvania and Maryland will likely be hit the hardest.

Travel trouble: Roads, bridges and overpasses will "likely become slick and hazardous," the National Weather Service said – possibly making travel nearly impossible in some places. There could also be power outages and tree damage due to the ice storm.

More storms: This is just the start of a series of winter storms expected to hit the northern U.S. AccuWeather lead long-range expert Paul Pastelok said a second winter storm can be expected to start on Friday and "a third storm is possible early next week." ❄️ See where the ice is going to hit.

Trump to attend Super Bowl 59

Even the president doesn't want to miss this year's Super Bowl. President Donald Trump will attend Sunday's rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.

Heightened security: Security has already been enhanced for this year's game following a New Year's Day attack in the city's French Quarter that killed 14 people and injured dozens more. Trump's presence will likely add another layer. 🏈 What to know about Trump's visit.

A medical miracle

Towana Looney could be just the start. Looney has lived for 10 weeks with a kidney from a pig instead of her own – the longest anyone has survived with an organ from another species. While animal organs have been under development as a possible substitute for human ones for decades, Looney is just the fifth person to receive one under what the Food and Drug Administration calls "compassionate use" for people without other options. This week, the FDA approved the first clinical trial for so-called xenotransplantation by United Therapeutics, a company that has raised most of the pigs that have been used in transplants. 👉 More on Looney's story.
