A new winter storm brewing in the South is expected to bring snow and ice. Former President Jimmy Carter's remains arrived in Washington, D.C., to lie in state. And "Bennifer" is officially no more.

👋 Howdy y'all! New Short List writer Rebecca Morin here. It's time for Tuesday's news.

Weather watch

Get the hot chocolate (and shovel) ready – another winter storm is a-brewing. This one is going to bring a wintery mess from Texas to the East Coast this week.

What to know: The storm is expected to spread snow and ice all the way from the Texas/Mexico border to the southern Plains and quite possibly up the East Coast. Places that don't often get snow or ice such as Austin, Dallas, Little Rock and Nashville will be hit. "It will be a big deal," AccuWeather meteorologist Tom Kines told USA TODAY. ❄️See the frigid forecast.

Judge blocks release of report on Trump criminal cases

A federal judge on Tuesday blocked Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith from publicly releasing his report on the investigation of President-elect Donald Trump. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon said she wants a chance to consider arguments about the report, which are for charges against Trump that have been dismissed.

What's the report on? Smith's report would provide the fullest description yet of the investigation that led to Trump's indictments for allegedly conspiring to overturn the 2020 election and mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House. Longstanding DOJ policy bars prosecuting sitting presidents, and a judge dismissed charges that Trump allegedly tried to steal the 2020 election in the wake of his win in November. 👉A breakdown of the court decision.

Carter to lie in state at US Capitol

It's time for Washington, D.C., to say goodbye to the 39th president. The remains of former President Jimmy Carter arrived in the nation's capital on Tuesday, where he will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol.

Schedule of events: Carter's remains arrived at Joint Base Andrews outside of Washington, D.C., on Tuesday afternoon before his motorcade arrived at the Navy Memorial. Carter's remains were transferred to a horse-drawn caisson for the procession to the Capitol. Members of Congress paid their respects to the late former president at service in the Capitol Rotunda Tuesday afternoon. Beginning Tuesday evening, Carter will lie in state for the public to view.

Funeral service: Carter's funeral is scheduled for Thursday at Washington National Cathedral. All five living presidents – Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama – are expected to attend. Afterward, Carter and his family will return to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private funeral service and interment. 👉 Follow today's coverage

'Bennifer 2.0' finalize split

Bennifer is officially kaput. After two years of marriage, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck finalized their divorce, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY. Lopez first filed for divorce against Affleck on Aug. 20 — the second anniversary of the couple's star-studded wedding in Georgia.

Second round together: Don't forget, this isn't the first time the couple has called it quits. Lopez and Affleck first got engaged in 2002 after hitting it off on the set of the rom-com "Gigli." But the two never made it to the altar, calling off the engagement. 👉 Everything we know.
