Why Trump held off on Colombia tariffs | Disagreement between the U.S. and Colombia over President Donald Trump's mass deportations of migrants risked becoming a trade war, with both sides promising new tariffs on goods coming from the other country. The showdown started after Colombian President Gustavo Petro said his country wouldn't accept deportation flights from the U.S. unless migrants are "treated with the dignity that a human being deserves." Trump retaliated, saying he would slap tariffs on all goods coming into the U.S. from the South American country. In the tit-for-tat, Petro then responded with his own economic threats before finally agreeing to the "unrestricted acceptance" of U.S. military flights deporting Colombian migrants. Read more |
California concerns turn from fire to mud | Intermittent showers sweeping across Southern California on Sunday provided welcome relief for firefighters battling devastating wildfires but threatened to bring an unwelcome side effect — mudslides. Showers could linger into Tuesday, spawning flood watches in areas where the Palisades, Franklin, Eaton, Bridge, and Hughes wildfires burned. What's the latest on TikTok? | President Donald Trump said over the weekend he was in talks with multiple people over buying TikTok and would likely have a decision on the popular app's future in the next 30 days. Early Saturday, Reuters reported two people with knowledge of the discussions said Trump's plan involves tapping software company Oracle and a group of outside investors to effectively take control of the app's operations. Under the deal being negotiated by the White House, TikTok's China-based owner, ByteDance, would retain a stake in the company, but data collection and software updates would be overseen by Oracle.
