Hundreds of homes and businesses have been torched by the California wildfires. Almost 180,000 people have been ordered to evacuate from wildfires raging Southern California. Political leaders – including the five living presidents – honored Jimmy Carter at his state funeral. And the College Football Playoffs are back.

'Heroic' efforts to stop LA wildfires

Multiple deadly wildfires fueled by extreme winds were still plaguing the Los Angeles area Thursday as thousands flee and firefighters deal with a water shortage.

Evacuation notice: Almost 180,000 people have been ordered to evacuate, with another 200,000 facing evacuation warnings. Authorities have confirmed at least five fatalities so far, although Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said it is early to provide a death toll.

Struggling to contain: Two of the largest blazes, the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, have 0% containment. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's three water tanks serving Pacific Palisades, which hold about a million gallons each, ran out Wednesday morning.

'Heroic efforts': Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass praised efforts by firefighters. "This is absolutely an unprecedented historic firestorm, but we are all hands on deck," Bass said. 👉 Follow today's coverage.

DC says goodbye to Jimmy Carter

Top politicians, faith leaders, family and friends of Jimmy Carter and everyday Americans braved frigid temperatures, snow and ice to pay their respect to the 39th president at his state funeral in the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday.

Private family funeral: Following Carter's state funeral in Washington, the 39th president's remains are heading home. The Carter family will hold a private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia.

"Practitioner of good works": President Joe Biden delivered the eulogy for his longtime friend. The president told USA TODAY he was asked by Carter to do so during their final meeting. "Many think he was from a bygone era, but he saw into the future," Biden said in his eulogy. 👉Follow today's coverage.

Are egg prices on the rise again?

They say you shouldn't count your eggs before they hatch. But it looks like you might be having to keep an eye on the ones in your fridge. Prices are rising nationwide for eggs – with some states like New York and California seeing a larger jump.

Why are prices going up? The ongoing bird flu outbreak is the biggest culprit for the current egg dilemma. More than 130 million poultry across 50 U.S. states have been affected by the virus as of Jan. 6, according to the Centers for Disease Control. 🥚 More on egg prices.

College Football Playoff semifinals kick off
