Hegseth pressed in confirmation hearing

Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Defense secretary, was grilled by Democrats on sexual assault and alcohol abuse allegations during his confirmation hearing at the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday. He came in as one of the most vulnerable of Trump's Cabinet picks.

Past allegations: Hegseth, a former "Fox and Friends" co-host, dodged questions about a 2017 rape complaint that resulted in no charges. He said the allegations were a "coordinated smear campaign in the media." He also sparred with Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, over his alleged history of heavy drinking.

More hearings set: Get ready to see more showdowns on Wednesday. Senate committee hearings are set for Trump's picks to run the Homeland Security, Justice, State and Transportation departments, the CIA, and the White House Office of Management and Budget. 👉 A recap of today's coverage.

Princess Kate's cancer in remission

Good news from the Princess of Wales. Princess Kate is officially in remission after announcing last March that she has cancer. Kate has not revealed what cancer she was diagnosed with.

'A new normal': In a social media post Tuesday, Kate said she is focusing on recovery. "As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal," she said. She accepted a new role of joint patron of The Royal Marsden hospital where she received treatment, to lend public support to the medical facility. 👑 More on what Kate said

Final report on Trump election case released

Special counsel Jack Smith released a bombshell report in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, which laid out key points from the case he built alleging Trump tried to steal the 2020 election.

What was revealed: In the 174-page report, Smith argued he had enough evidence to convict Trump on charges that he was conspiring to overturn the election and obstructing Congress. Smith also said his team considered bringing an even more serious criminal charge against Trump – a violation of the Insurrection Act.

End of a legal saga: The final report caps an extraordinary legal drama pitting the Department of Justice against the former, and now future, president. The charges against Trump were dismissed following the November election, under longstanding department policy against prosecuting sitting presidents. 👉 4 takeaways from the report.

Winds threaten LA fire progress

Amid the struggle to control the deadly wildfires plaguing Los Angeles, there's another complication: The fierce Santa Ana winds are back. Winds of 45 to 70 mph are forecasted through midweek, according to the National Weather Service.

The search is on: Police are searching for dozens of missing individuals from the fire. At least 24 people remain missing in areas scorched by the Palisades and Eaton fires, and at least another two dozen have been killed, officials have said.

Cutting the red tape: Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she signed an executive directive in an attempt to streamline recovery and rebuilding operations, addressing debris removal efforts and making available 1,400 housing units for those who have lost their homes. 👉 Follow today's coverage.
