A new era of weapons has arrived on the nation's streets: untraceable 3D printed guns and silencers. "Dangerously cold" weather is heading for the Midwest and Northeast. Bill Belichick has been named North Carolina's new head football coach.

👋🏾 I'm Jane, Daily Briefing author. Brown snow fell in Maine. Here's what officials say happened.

Are 3D printed weapons turning America into the Wild West?

For decades, America's detectives have made breakthroughs in crime using gun traces. But their sleuthing tactics are fast becoming old-school science as a new era of weapons increasingly hits the nation's streets: untraceable 3D printed guns and silencers like the ones found this week on Luigi Mangione, the suspected killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

And as the price of 3D printers continues to drop, their availability will attract more and more attention from possible criminals, experts told USA TODAY.

The "ghost gun" and silencer found in the suspected killer of Thompson's backpack at a Pennsylvania McDonald's were made using a 3D printer plus readily available metal parts, according to Altoona Police.
Arrests related to 3D-printed guns have tripled in recent years; federal officials recovered more than 25,000 homemade guns in 2022 alone.
And as the quality of 3D printers rises as prices fall, the trend shows no signs of stopping, threatening to make America a veritable Wild West of untraceable weapons, according to experts, ex-police officers and the White House.

House passes defense bill with controversial provision on transgender health care

House Republicans passed an $895.2 billion defense policy bill on Wednesday that includes a contentious provision to ban certain types of medical care for transgender children of military service members. The provision added to the National Defense Authorization Act prohibits TRICARE, the health care program for active-duty service members and their families, from covering medical interventions for gender dysphoria treatments that "could result in sterilization" to children under 18. The provision is the latest proposal by Republicans to take aim at transgender issues. Read more

'Dangerously cold' winter weather is back in the forecast

Thursday's weather will feature an Arctic blast for the Midwest and Northeast and still more lake-effect snow for the Great Lakes. Cold air associated with a high-pressure area will move over the Upper Midwest on Thursday, bringing temperatures 15 to 25 degrees below average over parts of the northern Plains and upper Mississippi Valley, along with brutally cold wind chills. The cold weather has prompted cold weather advisories over parts of North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, the National Weather Service said. Meanwhile, in the West, the ferocious Santa Ana winds will ease in Southern California, helping in the fight against the Franklin Fire in Malibu. Read more

Post-grad football lures players with a second shot at glory. They rarely get it.

Hezekiah West thought he had a fresh chance to score a place on a college football team – his dream since childhood. The once-promising running back from Wayne County, Mississippi, spent part of his high school senior year sidelined with a torn thigh muscle. That's when West turned to Mississippi Prep, a post-graduate football team unaffiliated with any school. He'd get a brand-new season to impress college teams, the coaches told him. For a fee. The promises kept coming. But when he arrived to play in 2023, the reality was starkly different. Read more
