Spirit Airlines files for bankruptcy

Spirit Airlines, the pioneer of no-frills travel in the U.S., filed for bankruptcy protection Monday after it struggled with a long run of quarterly losses, failed merger attempts and looming debt maturities.

How we got here: Spirit's troubles deepened after the collapse of its planned merger with JetBlue Airways in January and the impact of engine problems that grounded many of its aircraft.

E. coli outbreak linked to carrots

One person is dead and more than a dozen were hospitalized in an E. coli outbreak connected to recalled organic carrots, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 39 people reported to have been sickened live across 18 states. The organic carrots are from multiple brands sold by Grimmway Farms, and though they have been recalled from stores, they may still be in consumers' homes. 🥕 Here's what you should know.

Biden, White House condemn neo-Nazi march

The White House on Monday denounced the group of neo-Nazis who marched in a neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, calling it a "sickening display" and saying it was hostile to American values.

What happened? Columbus police said a caller reported that one of the people in the group sprayed pepper spray or mace at a passerby. Callers also reported the group was using racial slurs toward people of color on the street and appeared to be armed. 👉 What we know.

A wild weather forecast

The fall clash of seasons will be highly apparent this week as a mix of severe storms, wintry weather and wild temperature swings make for an active stretch of weather for millions of Americans.

What's going on? The Northwest and northern Rockies were under threat of widespread heavy precipitation and mountain snow on Monday, the National Weather Service said. And in the central U.S., thunderstorms could bring damaging winds and perhaps a few tornadoes between central Oklahoma and North Texas.
