Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned from Congress as calls for the release of his ethics report grow louder. The Onion now owns Alex Jones' Infowars. And a federal investigation found the conditions at a Georgia jail were not only dangerous but unconstitutional. |
👋 Hello, pals! Laura Davis here. Let's get going with Thursday's news. |
A partisan standoff is brewing over whether a House Ethics Committee report will be released before the Senate considers President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz for U.S. attorney general. |
How we got here: Gaetz, who resigned his House seat Wednesday shortly after his nomination, has been the subject of a three-year investigation over allegations of sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, accepting "improper gifts" and giving out special favors to people with whom he had relationships. | Matt Gaetz is being probed by the House Ethics Committee as a part of an ongoing investigation that includes allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Not The Onion: Infowars sold | No joke. Satire publication The Onion has won an auction for control of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' media platform Infowars, which was put up for auction by court order to pay off the more than $1 billion he owes to the families of Sandy Hook school shooting victims. The Onion announced the purchase – which has the support of Sandy Hook families – with its typical brand of humor, saying it planned to to "end Infowars' relentless barrage of disinformation for the sake of selling supplements." 🗞️ Read all about it here. | Families of Sandy Hook school shooting victims won a defamation suit against Jones in 2022 after they said he used his platform to push conspiracy theories that the 2012 mass shooting that killed 20 children and six adults was a hoax. Feds: Georgia jail inhumane |
Georgia officials violated the rights of people in an overcrowded jail plagued by killings and inhumane conditions, according to a scathing Justice Department report released Thursday. |
What happened? The Justice Department launched a civil rights investigation into "atrocious conditions" at the Fulton County Jail nearly a year after the body of a malnourished man covered in lice was found in a filthy cell in the jail's mental health unit. The medical examiner later concluded LaShawn Thompson, 35, had been "neglected to death." 👉 More from the report. | LaShawn Thompson, 35, died at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia after being eaten alive by insects and bed bugs, his family's attorney said.
