Will it snow on Thanksgiving? |
In some places, it's beginning to look (and feel) a lot like Christmas – but don't check your calendar. It's definitely Thanksgiving week. And as millions of people hit the roads and skies for the holiday, gnarly winter weather could whip up some Turkey Day travel trouble. |
A glimpse at the forecast: In the West, heavy rain and snow were forecast to slam much of California on Monday and Tuesday, the National Weather Service said. The storm will move into the Rockies by midweek, and by Thanksgiving Day, weather on the East Coast "doesn't look great," Weather.com said. ❄️ What to know as you hit the road. | AAA projects 79.9 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home for Thanksgiving this year – 1.7 million more people than last year. Case dismissed for Trump? |
Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith asked a judge Monday to dismiss the criminal case against President-elect Donald Trump on charges of trying to steal the 2020 election. |
Why it's happening: Long-standing department policy bars prosecuting sitting presidents, so Smith was expected to wind down both federal cases against Trump after he won the Nov. 5 election. "That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government's proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind," Smith wrote in his six-page filing. 👉 What it means. |
Biden's Turkey Day pardon | The latest in a long line of lucky birds, two Minnesota-born turkeys named Peach and Blossom, took a trip to the White House to receive their presidential pardon. In an annual Thanksgiving tradition dating back to 1989, President Joe Biden marked his last Turkey Day as president with a couple of jokes and an official pardon for the two turkeys named after the Delaware state flower, the peach blossom. 🦃 More from the presidential pardon. | President Joe Biden, right, pardons the National Thanksgiving Turkey Peach, alongside Chair of the National Turkey Federation John Zimmerman and his son Grant at the White House on Monday. See the clearest-ever view of the sun | No sunglasses required for this look at the sun. It may too bright and too powerful for us to look at with the naked eye, even from nearly 92 million miles away on Earth, but a solar orbiter recently got an unprecedented up-close glimpse of the star. The European Space Agency released four breathtaking images last week that show the sun in all its fiery glory. The images, obtained in March 2023 by the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter, represent what the agency says are the highest-resolution views of the sun's surface, known as the photosphere, to date. ☀️ See more stunning images here. | This high-resolution image shows the sun in ultraviolet light, revealing the Sun's upper atmosphere, the corona.
