America's biggest trading partners aren't pleased by Donald Trump's vow to ratchet up tariffs. The Biden administration wants Medicare and Medicaid to cover anti-obesity medications. And some tips if you're dreading political talk at Thanksgiving. |
👋 Hey, there! Laura Davis here. The countdown is on for Thanksgiving Day – y'all ready? I'm already strategizing ways to see how many deviled eggs I can pile up before my sister finishes the whole plate. 👀 While I think about that, you can read Tuesday's news! Enjoy. |
Trump's tariffs plan gets critical reception |
Officials in China, Mexico and Canada on Tuesday criticized a pledge made by President-elect Donald Trump to impose steep new tariffs on all three of the United States' largest trading partners. |
What's going on: Trump said the move, which appears to violate the terms of a free-trade deal Trump himself signed into law in 2020, is aimed at clamping down on drugs and migrants coming into the U.S. He made tariffs a central part of his economic campaign message, arguing they will also protect U.S. jobs. But many economists warn that tariffs drive up inflation. |
What's the move? The president-elect said he would sign an executive order immediately after his inauguration in January introducing a 25% tariff on all goods coming from Mexico and Canada and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China. There was quick pushback from all three countries. 🗣️ Here's what they're saying. | If Trump's tariffs plan proceeds once he takes office in January of next year, the price tag for a wide variety of products could be impacted, from food to oil – and even paper. The Biden administration on Tuesday announced plans to provide coverage for some costly anti-obesity medications, including Wegovy and Zepbound, for those enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid. |
Adding it up: Starting in 2026, an estimated 7.4 million people on Medicare and Medicaid would be eligible for the drugs, which can retail for over $1,000 monthly. Medicare, the federal health program for adults 65 and older, has been prohibited from covering weight-loss drugs for older Americans who are obese but do not have diabetes or heart disease. 👉 Here's what to know. |
A cease-fire deal after deadly clash |
Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah reached a cease-fire deal on Tuesday, providing a path to end a war that has killed thousands since it was first ignited by Israel's war with Hamas. |
How we got here: Israel launched an offensive in Lebanon in mid-September following months of tit-for-tat border attacks which started when Hezbollah attacked Israel in solidarity with Hamas and Palestinians in Gaza. |
Here's the deal: Guns on the Israel-Lebanon border will go silent for 60 days, starting Wednesday, allowing time for Israel to gradually withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon while Hezbollah moves its forces farther from Israel's border. | People walk past damaged buildings in the aftermath of Israeli strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs on Monday.
