👋 Hey, friends! Laura Davis here. Let's get going with Thursday's news. |
Matt Gaetz drops attorney general bid |
With controversy building around him, former Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his nomination to be President-elect Donald Trump's attorney general Thursday amid allegations of sexual misconduct. |
What's happening: Gaetz said he had "excellent meetings" with senators on Wednesday and said the "momentum was strong" for his candidacy. But his controversial bid to lead the Department of Justice put a spotlight on allegations he had sex with a minor and used drugs, and it became apparent there were not enough Republicans willing to support him. 👉 We break it down. | Former Rep. No letup for drenched Northwest | A bomb cyclone pounding Northern California and the Pacific Northwest with heavy rain and strong winds was already blamed for two deaths and will likely fuel flooding, rock slides, debris flows and more power outages, the National Weather Service warned Thursday. And more foul weather is on the way. A developing storm system forecast to swing off the Oregon and Washington coastline on Friday will add to the region's weather woes – but it isn't expected to rage quite like the first one, which drove wind gusts over 70 mph across parts of the state, toppling trees and power lines. 👉 Here's the full forecast. | A fallen tree sits atop a fire department vehicle in Seattle on Wednesday after a powerful storm hit the Pacific Northwest. Smollett's crime hoax conviction overturned | The Illinois Supreme Court has overturned actor Jussie Smollett's conviction for staging a fake hate crime against himself. In a decision issued Thursday, the court said the "Empire" actor, 42, should not have been charged for the same incident a second time after the original charges brought against him were dropped in 2019. Smollett was alleged to have falsely reported to police that he was the victim of a hate crime. He was found guilty in 2021 on five counts of disorderly conduct. 👉 What we know about the case. |
