Snow, rain and bitter cold are on the Thanksgiving Day menu for millions of Americans. But there's a little something extra for some to be thankful for: A northern lights show! |
👋 Howdy pals! Laura Davis here. Happy Thanksgiving Eve! Make sure you check your inbox tomorrow for a special holiday newsletter. 🦃 Now, on to Wednesday's news. |
How about some snow with your turkey? |
A cross-country storm, a blast of Arctic air and an outbreak of showers and thunderstorms threaten to snarl traffic and pile up delays at airports over the holiday weekend, one of the nation's busiest travel periods. |
What's happening: A snowstorm swept from California's Sierra Nevada across Colorado's Rocky Mountains, dumping snow all the way. On Wednesday, it will track through the Midwest and into the Northeast through Thanksgiving Day. |
Oh, brrrrr! Meanwhile, an Arctic blast is dropping temperatures across the northern Plains, Midwest and eastern U.S. to lows not experienced since last winter. ❄️ See the frigid forecast. | Workers spray deicer on a plane at Denver International Airport on Wednesday. Trevor Hughes, USA TODAY |
Or some northern lights with your leftovers? | Here's another reason to be thankful on Thursday: A solar storm is forecast to reach Earth and produce colorful northern lights in the Northern Hemisphere. The dazzling phenomenon – aka the aurora borealis – should be visible on Thanksgiving and Black Friday in parts of the northern United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says. |
A spectacular holiday show: The solar storm could pose a minimal threat to things like satellites, GPS signals and power grids, but it could provide some extra Thanksgiving entertainment when football and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade have long ended. Because of how the solar particles interact with Earth's magnetosphere, the powerful eruption should make the vibrant northern lights visible to a wider swath of the Northern Hemisphere than usual. ✨ See where they'll be visible. | The auroras are best seen around the magnetic poles of the Northern and Southern hemispheres in Europe, Asia and North America. But Thursday's incoming solar storm should make the auroras visible farther from the poles. Greg Derr/The Patriot Ledger/USA TODAY NETWORK |
Trump's picks hit with 'violent' threats |
Some of President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet nominees have been targeted with violent threats, and law enforcement officials are responding, Trump's transition team said Wednesday. |
What we know: The FBI confirmed it is investigating bomb threats and swatting incidents Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. |
What is swatting? It's a prank designed to draw an emergency law enforcement response to a hoax victim – often resulting in a SWAT team arriving ready for a possible violent encounter. 👉 Everything we know. |
US brokers prisoner swap with China |
Three Americans wrongfully detained in China for years were released in a prisoner swap between Washington and Beijing, the White House said Wednesday. |
What to know: The three Americans are Mark Swidan, Kai Li and John Leung. The Chinese nationals were not named. China claimed the cases were handled according to its laws. 👉 More about the deal. | Earlier this month at a regional summit in Peru, President Biden pressed Chinese President Xi Jinping for the return of the three Americans.
