Hottest year ever?

Since early this year, climate scientists have been saying 2024 was probably going to be the warmest year on record. And now, 10 months in, it's now "virtually certain," the Copernicus Climate Change Service has announced.

A new milestone: This year is also virtually certain to be the first full year where global average temperatures were at least 2.7 degrees above preindustrial levels, said Samantha Burgess of the Climate Change Service. That's a target world leaders and climate scientists − many of whom are gathering for the U.N. climate conference known as COP29 this week − had hoped to stay below. 🌡️ We break down what it means.

Trump makes picks for key positions

President-elect Donald Trump is already making pivotal staffing selections for his second administration.

Making moves on immigration: Hardline conservative Stephen Miller, one of Trump's longest-serving top immigration advisers, was tapped as deputy chief of staff for policy in the incoming White House – a choice that signals Trump plans to move aggressively on the "America first" agenda he ran on.
Also added to the roster: Tom Homan, the former head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will become a "border czar" overseeing deportation policy. And Trump picked Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., as the next ambassador to the United Nations.

Man found guilty of girls' murders in Delphi, Indiana

A jury on Monday found Richard Allen guilty of all four charges in the 2017 slaying of two teenage girls in Indiana. The jury convicted the 52-year-old Allen of two counts of murder and two counts of murder while kidnapping Abigail "Abby" Williams, 13, and Liberty "Libby" German, 14. The long-awaited decision in one of Indiana's most high-profile murder cases comes after more than seven years of investigation, nearly three weeks of testimony and 18 hours of deliberation. 👉 What's next with the case?

Monkeys still on the run

More than half of the monkeys that escaped a primate research facility last week in South Carolina have been recaptured, police said. Of the 43 monkeys that broke loose from Alpha Genesis, officials managed to recover 25 of them between Saturday and Sunday, leaving 18 of the animals still at large in Yemassee, a small town about 60 miles west of Charleston. The primates, a species known as rhesus macaques, made a break for it Wednesday when a caretaker failed to lock the doors after a feeding. 👉 More updates on the search.
