Flights from the U.S. to Haiti are suspended after planes were hit by gunfire. Donald Trump is continuing to fill out his new administration with key appointments. And Ruben Gallego will be Arizona's first Latino U.S. senator. |
👋 Hey, there! Laura Davis here. It's Tuesday. And it's time for the news. Let's boogie. |
But first: It's a bird! It's a plane! ☄️ Nope. It's a Starlink satellite breaking apart in Earth's atmosphere, creating a fiery show across the night sky. See the video. |
After two airliners were apparently struck by gunfire in Haiti amid ongoing civil unrest, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a notice Tuesday prohibiting U.S. flights into the country. American Airlines, JetBlue and Spirit, the only U.S. airlines that fly to Haiti, have travel waivers in effect that allow passengers scheduled to fly to or from the country to change their plans at no additional cost. |
What happened? A Spirit Airlines plane diverted to the Dominican Republic and one crewmember was injured when it was apparently struck by gunfire while attempting to land in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on Monday. And a JetBlue flight was also apparently hit by gunfire while departing Port-au-Prince on Monday, but it continued safely to New York. 🛩️ What to know about the flights. | A Spirit Airlines plane was apparently struck by gunfire while attempting to land at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Monday. More picks added to Trump's list |
While President-elect Donald Trump is busy picking top aides to serve in his incoming administration, his allies are adding their voices to another high-stakes election: the race to succeed Mitch McConnell as the Senate Republican leader. |
Headed to the Hill: Trump plans to come to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to meet with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and the next Senate majority leader, who will be elected that morning. The new Senate leader will play a major role in the incoming administration's vision for the country. Trump is also scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden at the White House on Wednesday. |
Making it official: Among several staffing nominations announced so far, Florida congressman Mike Waltz will be Trump's new national security adviser. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was tapped for U.S. ambassador to Israel. |
Wildfires burning on both coasts |
Firefighters in California gained a foothold in the battle against a wildfire north of Los Angeles while weather officials on Tuesday issued warnings across the Northeast, where relentless blazes have burned despite rain over the weekend. |
In California: The Mountain Fire in Ventura County, has which has torched over 200 homes and businesses and injured six people, has burned 32 square miles and was 48% contained as of Tuesday. |
In the Northeast: Red flag warnings were issued from New Jersey to Massachusetts after a modest amount of weekend rainfall brought only temporary relief to the drought-stricken region. The rain helped firefighters gain some control over the Jennings Creek Wildfire along the New Jersey-New York border, which had engulfed 3,500 acres of land and was 20% contained as of Tuesday morning. 👉 What to know about the wildfires. | A helicopter drops water onto a hotspot of the Jennings Creek wildfires in New Jersey on Monday. Democrat Ruben Gallego, a child of immigrants who made his way to Harvard, Iraq and Congress, defeated Republican Kari Lake, paving his way to become Arizona's first Latino U.S. senator in January. Gallego's victory in the tight race was called Monday after another batch of Democratic-heavy votes confirmed Lake could not plausibly overtake him. |
What to know: In a broadly disappointing election cycle for Democrats, Gallego was the only seat his party flipped in the Senate. With Gallego's win, the GOP will have 53 seats in the 100-member Senate. 👉 More about the historic victory. | Ruben Gallego walks offstage with wife Sydney after speaking at an election night watch party on Nov. 5 in Phoenix, Arizona.
