Aftershocks rumble, rescues underway after Taiwan quake |
The death toll rose to nine and scores of people were missing or trapped in rubble Wednesday after a massive earthquake struck Taiwan − and authorities warned that dangerous aftershocks could rock the densely populated island nation for several more days. |
Massive quake: Taiwan's National Fire Agency said at least 946 people were injured when the earthquake, measured as 7.2 magnitude by Taiwan officials and 7.4 by the U.S. Geological Survey, struck near the east coast city of Hualien at about 8 a.m. local time. A series of aftershocks followed, reaching up to 6.4 magnitude. 📍 See the latest on the earthquake. | A photo from Taiwan's Central News Agency shows damage in Hualien after a major earthquake hit Taiwan on Wednesday. -, CNA/AFP via Getty Images |
Outrage mounts after strike on aid workers in Gaza |
Family members and government leaders of the seven World Central Kitchen aid workers killed in an Israeli missile strike were pressing for answers Wednesday as details of the attack began to emerge. |
What they're saying: José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen, said the seven workers were targeted "systematically, car by car," as they were traveling in a convoy from an aid warehouse in central Gaza. The White House said it will wait to see the results of Israel's investigation into the deaths, including that of an American, before it considers taking action. 👉 What we know today. | One of the ambulances carrying the bodies of World Central Kitchen members arrives at the Rafah crossing with Egypt in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday. Is Trump lying about Ruby Garcia? |
Ruby Garcia. She's the latest person to be thrust into the political spotlight by former President Donald Trump. She's a Michigan woman who police say was killed by her undocumented partner. And her family says Trump is telling lies. |
A pattern: Before Trump latched onto Garcia's story last week, it hadn't received much national attention. But it fits a pattern where Trump uses a sensational story to juice up his hardline immigration stance on the campaign trail. |
What he said: Critics accused Trump of politicizing Garcia's murder after he brought her up during a Michigan speech on Tuesday. Trump also said he spoke with the slain woman's family, but Garcia's sister said it never happened. 👉 We break it down. |
What's the buzz about bird flu? |
If you're hearing a lot of squawking about bird flu lately, well, that would make sense. People have questions. It's me, I'm people. I have lots of questions. |

Yes – sick dairy cattle in Texas, Kansas and other states have recently tested positive or presumed positive for bird flu. And on Tuesday, the largest U.S. chicken egg manufacturer found bird flu at a facility in Texas. So, should we be worried? Not so fast.
