The Arizona Supreme Court voted to uphold a 160-year-old abortion ban. The parents of a school shooter were sentenced for their roles in the attack. And I hope you aren't Googling "solar eclipse eyes hurt."

👋 Hey there! It's your pal Laura Davis here with Tuesday's biggest news. Shall we?

But first: Now that we've looked up, it's time to look down. 👀 The next big natural phenomenon this year is a rare double brood of cicadas.

A near-total abortion ban in Arizona

The Arizona Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld an 1864 abortion ban that could shutter abortion clinics in the state, a move that's already causing political earthquakes.

What to know: Enforcement would mean the end of legal abortions in Arizona, though some providers said they will continue offering abortions for a time – likely through May – because of a prior court ruling. The state's Democratic attorney general has vowed not to enforce any abortion bans, but that decision could be challenged by the state's county attorneys. The ruling also puts a stark choice before Arizona voters if a proposed measure to protect abortion rights makes the ballot in November.

What's in the law? The law, which predates Arizona's statehood, mandates two to five years in prison for anyone aiding an abortion, with an exception to save the mother's life. 👉 Everything we know about the ruling.

Michigan mass shooter's parents get prison time

Jennifer and James Crumbley, the first parents of a mass school shooter in the U.S. to be convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the attack, were sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison.

What they're saying: The court heard statements from the family members of Tate Myre, 16, Hana St. Juliana, 14, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Justin Shilling, 17, students who were killed when the Crumbley's son went on a shooting rampage at Oxford High School in Michigan on Nov. 30, 2021. "You created all of this," Nicole Beausoleil, Baldwin's mother, said through tears. "You failed as parents. The punishment that you face will never be enough." 📍 Everything that happened in court today.

🔎 'Why do my eyes hurt?'

If you're reading this, hopefully, that means your eyes are OK. But that's apparently not the case for ... a whole bunch of people. According to Google Trends, which analyzes online searches, there was a significant spike in searches on Monday for terms like, "why do my eyes hurt" and "can the eclipse hurt your eyes." If you analyze the data by region, searches almost follow the eclipse's direct path, which stretched across North America in a northeast path from Texas to Maine. 👀 Here's a closer look.

'The ball is in Hamas' court'

Israel's War Cabinet met Tuesday to discuss the latest U.S. proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza. Hamas said it was reviewing the plan, but accused Israel of remaining "intransigent" and failing to respond to the demands of the Palestinian people. Hamas wants Israel to withdraw all forces from Gaza and allow displaced people to return to their homes. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the latest proposal "is very serious" and should be accepted by Hamas. 🔎 Take a closer look at what's in the proposal.
