More hostages, prisoners freed

The process of transferring a fifth group of Hamas-held hostages to the Red Cross en route to freedom began Tuesday as the two-day extension of an uneasy truce played out in the war-battered Gaza Strip. Ten of the freed hostages are Israeli − nine women and a 17-year-old girl − and the other two are Thai. About an hour after the Israeli announcement, 30 Palestinian prisoners were released. A two-day extension of the truce called for Hamas to release 10 hostages Tuesday and 10 Wednesday. Israel was scheduled to release 30 Palestinians each day. πŸ‘‰ Follow our live coverage.

41 workers who were trapped in India tunnel pulled free

India's transportation minister said Tuesday that all 41 construction workers who were trapped in a collapsed mountain tunnel in the country's north for more than two weeks have been pulled out after rescuers reached them earlier in the day. Nitin Gadkari, the minister of road transport and highways, said on X, formerly Twitter, that he was "completely relieved and happy" after all were rescued from the Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarkashi after an ordeal that lasted 17 days. The workers got trapped on Nov. 12, when a landslide caused a portion of the tunnel to collapse. πŸ‘‰ More about the dramatic rescue.

Here comes the snow

Brrrr. It's lake-effect snow season near the Great Lakes, and the first significant event of the year is forecast to dump as much as 1-2 feet in some areas, leading to what the National Weather Service calls "difficult to impossible" travel. Snow squalls well away from the Great Lakes are also possible into Tuesday evening, AccuWeather said. While snow will be the primary weather threat around the Great Lakes, below-average temperatures will continue to be the main story across much of the nation this week. ❄️ Take a look at the forecast.

Koch network backs Nikki Haley in GOP primary

Americans for Prosperity Action, the political network founded by billionaire Charles Koch, is endorsing Nikki Haley in the Republican primary, giving the former South Carolina governor a major boost less than 50 days before the Iowa Caucuses. The massive conservative organization announced the endorsement in a memo Tuesday. The network previously pledged to back an alternative to former President Donald Trump in the GOP primary race. The group's move to back Haley comes as the former Ambassador to the United Nations has risen above Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the second Republican behind Trump in key national and early primary state polls. πŸ—³️ Here's what to know.
