Good morning. It's Bailey Schulz here to bring you the day's top headlines.

It's day four of the United Auto Workers strike, in which members' demands include a 40% wage increase, increased benefits, a reduced workweek and more paid time off.

People interviewed by the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, said the union will likely have to accept that it will not win a 32-hour workweek for 40 hours of pay. But if the Detroit Three carmakers (General Motors, Ford and Stellantis) meet other demands – including a cost-of-living adjustment – the strike may end sooner than anticipated.

"If the unions are clever ... with the right mindset, they can win," said Balbinder Singh Gill, assistant professor of finance and labor expert at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. "I think carmakers are pressing to find a deal. It depends on the union and what is the line that they cannot go below and it depends on what the companies cannot give them. Then you find the right balance for structuring the deal."

Employees across industries are taking to the picket lines

The UAW strike comes as unions representing health care workers, fast food workers and other industries are increasingly flexing their power.

In California, most of the state's 500,000 fast food workers will be paid at least $20 per hour next year after a deal was announced earlier this week between labor unions and industries. A separate bill will increase health care workers' salaries to at least $25 per hour over the next 10 years.

The list of union demands is long and expensive, but getting a deal might be closer at hand than it appears if automakers offer certain things.
