United Auto Workers strike begins after failed contract negotiations

United Auto Workers are on strike and targeting Ford, General Motors and Stellantis plants in a few locations.

Cody Godwin, USA TODAY

Good morning on this historic Friday.

The United Auto Workers, for the first time ever, is striking at once at all three of Detroit's top automakers after failing to clinch a deal on a new contract by the 11:59 p.m. ET deadline on Thursday. Not only that, but the way the UAW has chosen to strike is expected to keep the automakers guessing. Instead of all 150,000 union workers walking out, only members at three assembly plants in Michigan, Ohio, and Missouri did so on Friday.

The so-called "Stand Up Strike" strategy targets specific plants of Ford Motor Co., General Motors and Stellantis, which makes Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Fiat brands. Union leaders said they will select new strike targets in various waves if negotiations continue to fail.

But let it be known: "if we need to go all out, we will. Everything is on the table," UAW President Shawn Fain said in a late-night livestream to members on Facebook Live.

I'm not sure who will win in all of this, but Elon Musk isn't sweating it.

September 15, 2023: UAW President Shawn Fain called for a strike after contract negotiations stalled with all three Detroit automakers; UAW members walked off the job at Ford Michigan Assembly Plant just after midnight. The current four-year contracts with General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis were in effect until 11:59 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 14, and without an agreement, the UAW initiated a stand-up strike, a strategic plan that the union is said to have for a strike targeting certain plants at the different automakers in waves.
