Recession less likely, but West and South may feel it

It's been a looming question: Is a recession coming or not? With September here, the chances have fallen significantly, but the West and South can still slip in to a downturn, experts say . The odds of a recession in the West is 35.2% because of rising home prices and layoffs at big technology companies.

In the South, the odds are similar at 34.7%. While home prices did increase in the South after the pandemic, experts predict a dip next year. But, paired with inflation, household budgets are feeling the pressure after seeing prices for goods and services increase. And mortgage delinquencies, especially in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, were among the highest in the country last year.
