Hi there OnPolitics readers. The country is four days away from a government shutdown that would impact millions of Americans.

That's not a typo – it's really four days.

We're bringing you not only breaking news from Washington but also a look at how your family would be impacted if the government has to close its doors.

Here's a guide to just some of our coverage:

What's a government shutdown? A government shutdown means all federal agencies and services officials don't deem "essential" have to stop their work and close their doors. Some of those essential services include the U.S. Postal Service delivering mail and people receiving Medicare and Social Security benefits.

What are the odds of a government shutdown? Hold off on placing any bets. If lawmakers can reach a compromise by Saturday on a dozen bills that would fund the government, a shutdown is off the table. Congress could also pass a temporary measure to keep the government funded, known as a continuing resolution.

How does a government shutdown affect me? You don't have to live in Washington for a government shutdown to affect you. A shutdown can impact food safety inspections, nutrition assistance programs, air travel and care programs for kids.
