Biden says border will be 'chaotic for a while' when Title 42 ends |
President Joe Biden on Tuesday said it will be "chaotic" at the border when an emergency immigration restriction tied to the pandemic ends Thursday. Asked if the country is ready for the expected surge of migrants into the U.S., Biden said his administration is doing everything it can to prepare. "It's going to be chaotic for a while," he told reporters. Hundreds of migrants are already sleeping on downtown sidewalks of El Paso and overflowing the city's shelters. Biden's comments were more candid than the message his press secretary sent hours earlier about the lifting of Title 42, which allows easier expulsion of migrants. Read more |
Biden, McCarthy fail to reach a debt ceiling deal in Oval Office meeting |
The U.S. continues to lumber toward a potential default by the end of the month after an an Oval Office meeting Tuesday afternoon between President Joe Biden and top congressional leaders failed to produce a breakthrough in the standoff over raising the debt ceiling. The U.S. faces a June 1 deadline to raise the debt ceiling to avoid a government default and a potential economic crisis. After the meeting, McCarthy and Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans remain committed to spending cuts as part of raising the debt ceiling, while Biden and Democrats made clear they remain opposed. California to pay $24M settlement to family of man who died in custody |
California will pay $24 million in a civil rights settlement with the family of Edward Bronstein, a man who died in police custody after screaming "I can't breathe" while multiple officers restrained him in 2020, lawyers said. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said California Highway Patrol officers failed Bronstein, "and their failure was criminally negligent, causing his death." The $24 million settlement has been called the largest civil rights settlement of its kind by the state of California, according to attorneys for Bronstein's young children. Read more |
Imran Khan appears in court as Pakistan braces for violence |
Pakistan is bracing for more turmoil a day after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was dragged from court in Islamabad and his supporters clashed with police across the country. The 70-year-old opposition leader appeared in a court on Wednesday for a hearing in which a judge was asked to approve keeping him in custody for up to 14 days. The judge is expected to rule on the request later. Khan's arrest deepened political turmoil and sparked violent demonstrations.
