πΊπΈ Biden honors fallen troops |
"Never forget the price that was paid to protect our democracy," President Joe Biden implored the nation during a Memorial Day speech full of reflections and tributes at National Arlington Cemetery after laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The president, as he has in past years, remarked on the death of his own son, Beau Biden, an Iraq War veteran who died of brain cancer in 2015. "He didn't perish in the battlefield. It was cancer that stole him from us," Biden said. "As it is for so many of you. The pain of his loss is with us every day but (is) particularly sharp on Memorial Day." Biden said Americans have a responsibility to "ensure that sacrifice was not in vain." | President Joe Biden participates in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Texas House impeaches Attorney General Ken Paxton |
Texas' GOP-led House of Representatives impeached state Attorney General Ken Paxton on Saturday on articles including bribery and abuse of public trust — a sudden, historic rebuke of a fellow Republican who rose to be a star of the conservative legal movement despite years of scandal and alleged crimes. The move constitutes an abrupt downfall for one of the GOP's most prominent legal combatants and triggers Paxton's immediate suspension from office pending the outcome of a trial in the state Senate. Boston Celtics on precipice of historic NBA comeback |
In 150 tries, no NBA team has ever returned from a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series. The Boston Celtics will get a chance to be the first Monday night after Derrick White's buzzer-beating put-back on Saturday forced a decisive Game 7 (8:30 p.m. ET, TNT) in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat. White grabbed a rebound near the rim on a missed Marcus Smart 3-point attempt and made the game-winning basket. Down 3-0 a week ago, the Celtics avoided elimination for the fifth consecutive game since trailing Philadelphia 3-2 in the conference semifinals. Turkey's Erdogan wins another term, could govern until 2029 | Turkey's all-powerful leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan won a presidential election runoff Sunday, a victory that means he can extend his rule into a third decade. The vote between Erdogan and challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu came after neither candidate received at least 50% support from Turkey's voters in a May 14 election. The vote resonates beyond the borders of the NATO ally. Erdogan helped broker a grain deal between warring Russia and Ukraine and blocked Sweden from joining NATO. But he has also eroded Turkey's democratic institutions, aggressively consolidating his own power.π Read more. | President Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaks to supporters at the presidential palace after winning reelection in a runoff on May 29, 2023 in Ankara, Turkey. Kyiv absorbs 'most massive' drone attack of war | At least one person has been killed after Kyiv was subjected to the "most massive" drone attack since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began 15 months ago, a five-hour bombardment as the ancient city prepared to celebrate the anniversary of its founding Sunday. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said preliminary information indicated Kyiv's air defenses shot down more than 40 drones. Ukraine said that Saturday night was also record-breaking in terms of Shahed drone attacks across the country. The attacks come against the backdrop of Russia's ambassador to the U.K., Andrei Kelin, warning of an escalation in Ukraine. π Here's the latest. | Russia fired a barrage of missiles at Kyiv on Monday, sending panicked residents running for shelter in an unusual daytime attack on the Ukrainian capital following overnight strikes.
