🔵The week of Trump: Donald Trump checked a historic box this week, becoming the only former president to face criminal charges following his indictment by a Manhattan grand jury . But Trump's troubles likely won't be his last. Two other investigations appear to be nearing their conclusion: His alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia and his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. In any event, the episode opened a new chapter in American politics and law, one that could "strengthen the nation's democracy or weaken it," writes USA TODAY's Susan Page. |
🔵A mom's search for answers: Mary Moffett is fighting for accountability over the alleged drugging and sexual assault by a University of Michigan football player of her daughter Quinn Moffett, who died from a drug overdose in 2021. "Whatever happened back in 2018," Moffett wrote to head football coach Jim Harbaugh and athletic director Warde Manuel, "was the catalyst for so much of the pain, sadness, and depression that took away the beautiful light she was, and left her struggling so much for the last few years." At a time when 1 in 5 female students are raped in college, Quinn's case raises questions about what schools and law enforcement agencies owe their communities when people who have said they were sexually assaulted are unable to tell their stories. 🔵'States of America': The death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of five Memphis police sent a shockwave through the nation. "I have to always keep in mind that my son was sacrificed for the greater good. That's what's holding me up. That's what's keeping me together," said Tyre's mother, RowVaughn Wells. But it's not clear what the greater good will look like for Memphis and policing. USA TODAY and The Commercial Appeal collaborated on a story about the death of Nichols as part of the documentary video series "States of America." 💵The power of 'cash stuffing': Jasmine Taylor was $80,000 in debt in 2021 when she first learned about cash stuffing, a budgeting system where individuals take cash for different spending categories and put the money into envelopes. For Taylor, it started paying off. "It was just something about tangibly handling the cash and seeing my money save up in the envelopes that really clicked a switch in my head," she said.
