Today was unprecedented and, at times, seemed surreal, OnPolitics readers.

There was no mugshot, but the photo of former president Donald Trump sitting next to his lawyers in the courtroom was one for the history books.

"He's frustrated, he's upset," his lawyer told reporters after he left the courtroom.

What to know: Donald Trump pleaded not guilty today to 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first-ever criminal charges against a former U.S. president.

The hearing followed his surrender to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg after a grand jury moved to indict the former president last week.

What we know about the charges: Trump was formally charged with 34 felony counts for falsifying business records in relation to alleged hush-money payments made to multiple people, including adult film star Stormy Daniels, in the days before the 2016 election.

His arraignment sets in motion a long series of legal proceedings that could eventually result in a criminal trial.
