Powerful tornadoes battered Arkansas and several other states in the South and Midwest, including Iowa and Michigan, inflicting "significant damage."

Tornado outbreak: Death toll up to 29 with more bad weather forecast

Severe weather rocked large parts of the nation this weekend. The death toll rose to 29 and more dangerous weather was forecast Sunday for a wide swath of the South and Midwest already in ruins from a surge of storms that fueled confirmed or suspected tornadoes in at least eight states. U.S. power outages spiked to over 1 million customers on Saturday afternoon, and almost 400,000 homes and businesses were in the dark across a dozen states Sunday. The storms left a path of damage across states including Arkansas, Alabama, Indiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Iowa. Get the latest severe weather updates.

March Madness: Iowa and LSU battle for women's title

And then there were two. Iowa and LSU were facing off Sunday afternoon in the women's college basketball national championship game after winning their Final Four matchups on Friday. The Hawkeyes stunned defending champion South Carolina — which had entered the game riding a 42-game winning streak — behind a Final Four record 41 points from Caitlin Clark. LSU, led by three-time national champion coach Kim Mulkey, rallied past Virginia Tech thanks to an incredible fourth quarter. In men's Final Four action Saturday, San Diego State rallied back from a 14-point deficit to end Florida Atlantic's Cinderella run on a buzzer-beater, while UConn cruised past Miami. After indictment, Trump campaign raises over $4 million in 24 hours

Former President Donald Trump raised over $4 million in the 24 hours after the news of his indictment broke. Before the indictment was made public, his campaign sent out fundraising emails asking for donations to stop what he called the "witch hunt." Both his Republican allies and Democratic critics are fundraising off of the indictment. For example, Republican Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance sent out a fundraising email on Thursday evening asking supporters to donate and "step up for President Trump and put America First."

'I'm still alive': Pope Francis leaves hospital after bronchitis treatment

Pope Francis was discharged on Saturday from the Rome hospital where he was treated for bronchitis, joking to journalists before being driven away: "I'm still alive." On Wednesday, the 86-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic hospital, where he was being treated with intravenous antibiotics for bronchitis. The Vatican added Francis had experienced difficulty breathing in the days leading up to his hospitalization.

Former Arkansas Gov. Hutchinson joins 2024 GOP presidential race

Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced his presidential campaign Sunday on ABC's "This Week." Hutchinson has long been considering a presidential bid, making a visit to the key first-in-the-nation caucus state of Iowa in late March. He is one of former President Donald Trump's most vocal critics in the GOP presidential field. Prior to when Trump's indictment became public, Hutchinson told USA TODAY that the former president should drop out of the presidential race if he were to be indicted.

Blinken pushes Russia to release detained Americans

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday urged his Russian counterpart to immediately release two Americans , including a Wall Street Journal reporter detained last week on espionage charges. Blinken expressed "grave concern" to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov over the Kremlin's detention of journalist Evan Gershkovich, according to a State Department statement. Blinken also made the request for Paul Whelan, a corporate security executive imprisoned in Russia since 2018. Lavrov on Sunday dismissed Blinken's requests, saying they were a matter for the Russian courts to decide.
