Happy Thursday friends! Did you miss me yet? |
I have some books news for you, but first things first: what did we think of our latest Book Club discussion with poet José Olivarez and Pamela Avila, our star entertainment editor who interviewed him? | If we're being honest here… bosses, please avert your eyes… I didn't read our USA TODAY Book Club pick for March, which was Olivarez's "Promises of Gold." Mostly because I'm not a big poetry person, but also because your girl was BUSY and reading took a back seat (or rather no seat) last month. But, because it's my job, I tuned into Pamela and José's conversation on Tuesday and was expecting it to feel like most other book club discussions, BUT BOY DO I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU! | If poetry has a new fan, it's me! Is it possible to call yourself a poetry revert? Convert? Whatever it is, I'm that. You see, friends, poetry always seemed very obscure to me. Like this flowery language that was meant to convey something I could never quite understand. It was cute. It was romantic. It was pretty, but yet something I couldn't grasp. Where were the characters? The story line? What happens next? I was confusion and I didn't like it. Our books editor Barbara VanDenburgh explained the aversion to poetry probably stems from the good old schooling days where teachers would force us to write essays about the meaning behind poems that never really resonated with us. |
Anyways, all of that is a super long winded way of saying José's poetry changed my life . OK, that may be a bit exaggerate-y and dramatic, but it did make me look at poetry through a new lens. Pamela and José talked about the inaccessibility of poetry, how poems can mean different things to different people and how sometimes you're just not going to resonate with a poem or understand it and that's OK. I could keep explaining how dope the chat was and how much I took away from it, but I'd like for you to see for yourself here and let me know what you think! | | | | If you're looking for a poetry collection about familial, romantic, platonic and self kids of love – pick up "Promises of Gold," on sale now. | | | | Memoirs can help create understanding and empathy. 10 must reads from people you might not know that will help you better understand the world | | | | Abraham Riesman's new biography tackles the famed wrestling promoter, political power broker and crucial Donald Trump ally. | | | | Attempted book bans and restrictions at school and public libraries continue to surge, setting a record in 2022 | | | | This spring brings new books from Paris Hilton, Rainn Wilson, and Laura Dern with her mother Diane Ladd.
