Tonight we start finding out what voters really want
Let's start our Election Day newsletter with a note from Columnist Ingrid Jacques about her latest column.

We've finally made it to Election Day. After months of pontification and predictions, the country will soon know what voters want.

If the polls have been anywhere close to accurate, Republicans are in for a good night. Voters have consistently said that inflation and the economy – shortly followed by crime and immigration – are their leading issues, and Republican candidates have most directly led on those concerns.

Democrats, on the other hand, have remained solely focused on scaring citizens about how the Democratic Party is the only hope of saving women's bodies and democracy. I think this will prove a losing message.

In my current state of Michigan and my home state of Oregon, the Republican candidates for governor – Tudor Dixon and Christine Drazan, respectively – are running much closer races than anyone predicted. As white suburban women and independents – two key voting blocs – have switched their support to the GOP in recent weeks, this could help push Republicans to victory.

In my latest column, I spoke with Michigan's Dixon about the final days of her campaign and what she was hearing from voters – and it wasn't about abortion or democracy.

If Democrats lose to a red wave, it's because they ignored what voters were telling them.
