UK ushers in third prime minister in three years |
| Liz Truss will become Britain's third female prime minister after Monday's announcement by the ruling Conservative Party that she would replace Boris Johnson. Truss, 47, was foreign secretary in Johnson's government and has portrayed herself as the political heir to Margaret Thatcher, Britain's formidable cheerleader for free markets and low taxes. One suspect in Canadian stabbing massacre found dead, other brother still on the run |
| A suspect in one of Canada's bloodiest massacres was found near where 10 people were stabbed to death and 18 were injured early Sunday in at least 13 locations in an Indigenous community in Saskatchewan. Damien Sanderson, 31, died in unclear circumstances, officials said, but his injuries did not appear to be self-inflicted. His brother, Myles Sanderson, 30, remains at large and is believed to be in Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan. Authorities believe that some of the stabbing victims were targeted while others were random. Read more |

Federal judge orders a special master to review Mar-a-Lago documents |
| U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon approved the appointment of a special master to review documents seized in last month's search of Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago beach club, citing a need to promote "fairness" in dealing with the records. Cannon, who also called for a temporary halt to the federal inquiry until a document review is completed, asked Trump's team and the government to submit potential candidates for the special master role by Sept. 9. Extreme weather recap: 'blistering' heat and drenching rainfall |
| The extreme heat that broiled drought-ravaged California over the Labor Day weekend will continue for much of the week while also having a similar effect on states east of California, forecasters said Monday. The nation's hottest spot, Death Valley, California, is predicted to hit 125 degrees Tuesday. Meanwhile, flash flooding and severe weather this weekend in the Midwest and South have led to at least one death and widespread infrastructural damage. The heavy rains were expected to continue through the week, moving toward the northeast. Read more |

Winners and losers from Week 1 of the college football season |
| The first full weekend of the college football season is in the books, and though it wasn't the most loaded Week 1 slate in recent memory, fans were still treated to all the craziness they could have asked for. Florida stunned No. 7 Utah in the Swamp to kick off the Billy Napier era, a Georgia team filled with new faces absolutely crushed Oregon and a second-half comeback allowed a shorthanded Ohio State to survive at the Horseshoe in a top-five matchup against Notre Dame and new coach Marcus Freeman.
