It's Thursday. Welcome back, readers. It's Brett Molina here nursing an Apple-event hangover to bring you the top Talking Tech stories. |
I mean, did I plan to talk about anything else but Apple? Of course not. In case you missed it, Apple unveiled the iPhone 14 as part of its annual fall event on Wednesday. We also got special appearances from the Apple Watch Ultra, the Apple Watch Series 8, and the second-generation AirPods Pro. |
While Apple announcements are always fascinating, equally interesting is the stuff we did not see during the event. Here are four examples. |
No iPhone 14 Mini. Apple has rolled out smaller iPhones the last two years. Not this time. Instead, they swap it out for the larger iPhone 14 Plus with a 6.7-inch screen. You had a good run, Mini. |
Buzzy features for Pros only. You may have noticed this going back to the iPhone X, where Apple saves some of the flashier hardware touches for its pricier models. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus upgrades feel incremental compared with what the Pro models received with an always-on display, 48-megapixel camera, and the Dynamic Island notch. |
A higher iPhone price. Several experts were expecting a price hike on the new iPhones in light of rising inflation and lingering supply chain issues. Good news: Apple kept prices the same. Then again, iPhones have always been pricey. |
What about that mixed-reality headset? We've heard so many rumors swirling about Apple's plans to introduce its own mixed reality headset that could run augmented reality apps, virtual reality, or both. Another year, another absent announcement. |

Thursday tech tip |
I know what some of you are thinking: Now might be a good time to upgrade that older smartphone for an iPhone 14. But before you process that preorder, you could save yourself money and get a really nice phone by holding out for an iPhone 12 or iPhone 13. |
One more thing |
Please check out this important piece from USA TODAY's Investigations team on how police are cracking more cold cases with cellphones. Police are increasingly searching and seizing digital evidence , including emails, Facebook messages, and data stored on devices. However, many critics fear the practice is an invasion of privacy. |
Until next week. Thanks for reading. |
