OnPolitics: Inside the courtroom for a Capitol rioter's trial
Accounts of chaos at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 opened the second day of testimony in Capitol rioter Doug Jensen's trial on Wednesday.

Hello hello, OnPolitics readers!

It's Ella, back from a brief OnPolitics hiatus. I've spent the last two days in a D.C. federal courtroom covering the trial of Capitol rioter Doug Jensen, one of the most high-profile cases tied to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on our nation's legislature.

Accounts of the chaos at the Capitol that day opened the second day of testimony in Jensen's trial on Wednesday. Several members of law enforcement who clashed with Jensen in the building's halls, including Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman, gave testimony for the prosecution, portraying Jensen as  "aggressive, "arrogant," and at one point, the "leader of the mob." Read that coverage here.

There's never been a question of whether Jensen was at the Capitol on Jan. 6. Ample photo and video evidence show Jensen parading through the building, wearing a hard-to-miss "Q" t-shirt, in homage to the conspiracist movement QAnon. Jensen's attorney, Christopher Davis, said plainly in his opening remarks that this is no "whodunnit" case.

Instead, the defense has painted Jensen as less violent than other Capitol rioters — one of the rioters "dressed in costume," not "dressed for battle."

I'll be back at court tomorrow with more updates on Jensen's trial. In the meantime, here are today's top stories out of Washington.

Real quick: Stories you'll want to read

Save America's spending: As Donald Trump worked to mount a legal defense to an unprecedented federal search of his Mar-a-Lago estate, one of a litany of escalating investigations with the former president at the center, his political action committee's bills for legal consulting skyrocketed, reporters Erin Mansfield and Kevin McCoy found.
Trump investigation special master: The special master reviewing 11,000 documents seized at Donald Trump's Florida estate asked for help Thursday from a retired judge, Justice Department correspondent Bart Jansen reports.
Antifa on trial: A criminal case could change how American law enforcement tackles the much-misunderstood movement known as Antifa, writes extremism reporter Will Carless.
Electoral Count Act overhaul: The House approved bipartisan legislation Wednesday to clarify how presidential Electoral College votes are tallied and challenged, aiming to prevent confusion and a repeat of the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021.
ICYMI: Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' wife, Ginni Thomas, agreed to be questioned by the House committee investigating the Capitol attack.

🗣️ What's next On Politics: Arizona's secretary of state races are typically sleepy campaigns, but this year's contest will seize the national spotlight when the two major party contenders clash in their first debate tonight.

Check back at USATODAY.com for coverage of the takeaways.
