Connie Schultz stops by to talk about autumn and her mother's hair
Fridays are for hearing from Connie as we head into the weekend.

It may be late summer to you, but in this house the autumn wreath is on the front door and a fresh bouquet of red sweetgum leaves sprout from a tiny vase on the kitchen windowsill.

This is my heritage.

I was raised by a mother Janey who was an autumn enthusiast. Like her, I was born hot – not that kind of hot – and so while I love the randomness of summer, I always welcome the chill of fall that pinches my cheeks and lifts my eyes to the ballet of reds and golds dancing in the winds. For all my 20 years as a columnist, I've heard from readers who think my hair is too long for a woman my age. My guess is they've forgotten the thrill of an autumn breeze that makes our tresses feel like wings.

Janey Schultz loved autumn so much that in October 1978 she allowed daughter Connie to stick a branch of fall foliage into her carefully coiffed hair.

Windblown hair held no appeal for Mom. For much of her adult life, she wore an Aqua Netted beehive that could withstand a snow squall. She loved the colors of fall, and the smell of the leaves. This photo of her is from my college days in the late 1970s. Most years Dad took Mom on long drives in the autumn to "see the leaves," and this particular journey brought them to Kent State's campus in October.

I don't know how I talked Mom into posing with these leaves in her hair, but I do remember it took forever for me to stop laughing so that I could snap the photo. Mom, on the other hand, was ready for her moment. She knew deadpan was the way to go.

Trump and MAGA Republicans are a threat to democracy

By Rex Huppke

President Joe Biden finally said the words Americans gobsmacked by the MAGA-fication of American politics have been waiting to hear: "Too much of what's happening in our country today is not normal."

He's right. And I'd argue a sizable majority of Americans, including many Republicans, know he's right.

It's not normal to deny the results of a free and fair election. It's not normal to incite an attack on the U.S. Capitol and then side with the attackers once justice is meted out. It's not normal to demonize any government institution or official – from the Department of Justice to the FBI to a certain vice president – who doesn't kowtow to one leader's demands. Read more...
