Your weekend must reads 📰

Another mass shooting, fighting pancreatic cancer, Amazon Prime Day and more must reads from USA TODAY. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

The Short List

Saturday, July 9

"When do we, as residents of a country addicted to guns and accepting of constant casualties, not have to be vigilant? Tell me the exact place one can go in this country and feel honestly, truly safe.

It's not a house of worship. It's not an office building. It's certainly not a school, college campus or any kind of public event.

And now it's not a Fourth of July parade."

🔵Good morning, friends of The Short List. It's John, and as I look back over the week's news, I am confronted with yet another mass shooting, this one in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, in which seven were killed and dozens wounded.

If you are sick of reading about mass shootings, well, so am I. So is USA TODAY's Rex Huppke, who wrote the column containing today's intro. So is USA TODAY Editor-in-Chief Nicole Carroll, who wrote about our newsroom's numb exhaustion in the face of an unending nightmare.

But in the end, it's our job – and our calling. And USA TODAY journalists did some great work covering Highland Park, in case you missed it:

Mass shooters are rapidly becoming younger and deadlier in the US
4 members of same family were wounded during the parade carnage
They came for the American dream. They survived an American shooting.

Here's hoping that next week we won't be revisiting this awful topic. On to some more hopeful things:

⚕️'Watershed moment': Advances are coming to treatments of pancreatic cancer, even as it's poised to overtake lung cancer as the deadliest type of tumor.

🚢All aboard: After more than 2 years under a COVID cloud, the cruise industry is coming back.

☀️Ketamine for depression: Sharon Osbourne says the drug helped her mental health. Is this the next big trend?
