The Short List

Saturday, June 4

Good morning, friends of The Short List! I'm John, and these are the must reads of the week from the USA TODAY NETWORK. If you missed these great stories the first time around ... well, you're in luck!πŸ€

πŸ€But first, some hoops: Don't miss USA TODAY's coverage of the NBA Finals. On Thursday, Boston stunned Golden State 120-108 in Game 1. Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Sunday (8 ET, ABC).

And now, here are your must reads.

πŸ”΅Broken adoptions: For three years, Mark and Tina Chase had waited for the day their foster daughter Becca would legally become theirs. Tragically, when that day finally came, it wasn't what they'd planned.

Becca had suffered mental health issues from years of abuse, but the Indiana foster care system made it difficult for her to receive consistent treatment. Becca's behavior gradually deteriorated: major tantrums, running away and attempts at suicide. The Chases' story is similar to that of many other families who faced severe challenges meeting the mental health needs of their foster children.

πŸ”΅School shooting survivors: Columbine. Virginia Tech. Red Lake. For school shooting survivors, the massacre in Uvalde, Texas, is a traumatic reminder of their past – and the difficult decisions they must make for their own kids.

"I honestly don't really know how to talk about this with my girls yet and am actually dreading if they bring this up," said Colin Goddard, who was shot four times in his French class at Virginia Tech when he was a 21-year-old senior.

πŸ„‍♀️Plus-sized surfer: In 2020, Elizabeth Sneed launched @curvysurfergirl on Instagram to showcase plus-size women like her who surf . Six months later, it catapulted to 10,000-plus followers, her own website and a surf retreat she led for women around the country.

"You know, if you can surf, it doesn't matter what a quote-unquote athlete has to look like," she says. "You are an athlete. Doesn't matter if you're 50 or 60 pounds heavier than the average woman (who is) surfing."

✨Oh, and by the way: There are more great reads below.πŸ‘‡ See you next week!
