100-plus days at war: Russia continues to bombard eastern Ukraine |
Russia continued its deadly assault in Ukraine's east Saturday as the war stretched past the 100-day mark and experts warned of a grinding conflict with no end in sight. Russia has targeted areas in the Donbas region using both guided and unguided munitions, according to an assessment released Saturday by the United Kingdom's Defense Ministry. Meanwhile, the war's impact on global food insecurity moved center stage, as the chairman of the African Union, Senegal's President Macky Sall, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to discuss the effective blockade of Ukraine's sea ports from exporting the country's grain. The European Union on Friday formally approved an embargo on Russian oil and other sanctions targeting major banks and broadcasters. |

6 dead, 25 wounded in Philadelphia, Chattanooga club shootings |
Police hunted for multiple gunmen Sunday after a shooting rampage on a crowded downtown street killed three people, wounded 11 and ignited chaos as revelers fled the carnage. Hours later, a shooting at a Tennessee nightclub left three dead and 14 wounded in Chattanooga as gun violence continued its unrelenting sweep across the nation. One of the deaths involved a person hit by a vehicle during a mad scramble after the shooting started shortly before 3 a.m., Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy said. In Philadelphia, 10 people were transported to the hospital, according to Damien Woods, a spokesman for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Three were deceased, one was released and the other six were in stable condition. No arrests were made. Two handguns were recovered at the scene, including one with an extended magazine. Tropical storm slams South Florida |
Southern Florida was hit with heavy rainfall and gusty winds Saturday as a storm system flooded streets, stranded cars and threatened to form into a tropical storm after passing over land. The storm system, dubbed Potential Tropical Cyclone One by the National Hurricane Center, would be named Alex if it becomes a tropical storm. The Florida Keys and the northwestern Bahamas also saw heavy rain Saturday. Tropical storm conditions were forecast for Saturday in Florida and in the northwestern Bahamas by afternoon. By early Saturday afternoon, between 7 and 13 inches had already fallen in Miami, according to the National Weather Service in Miami. The city saw flash flooding Saturday morning as fire crews responded to multiple reports of cars stuck in floodwaters and advised residents to stay off roads. |

Coco Gauff falls to No. 1 Iga Swiatek in French Open finals, Rafael Nadal wins 14th French Open singles title |
Iga Swiatek continued her destruction of the women's tennis field this year, routing American Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in a little more than an hour in the French Open women's final on Saturday. In the second set, Gauff broke Swiatek in the first game, but Swiatek evened it at 2, breaking Gauff for the fourth time, winning 10 of 11 points and turned it on from there. Gauff is the youngest French Open finalist since Kim Clijsters in 2001. On Sunday, Rafael Nadal extended his record of French Open singles titles to 14, dispatching No. 8 seed Casper Ruud of Norway 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 to become, at age 36, the oldest champion in tournament history. Nadal broke serve three times to win the opening set in 51 minutes, then won the second set on another service break when Ruud double-faulted on set point. |

Biden, first lady evacuated after small plane flew into restricted airspace near family's beach house |
A small private airplane flew into restricted airspace near President Joe Biden's beach house on Saturday, prompting the U.S. Secret Service to evacuate the president and First Lady Jill Biden. Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the U.S. Secret Service, said in a statement that the privately owned aircraft mistakenly entered the secured area and was "immediately" escorted out of the restricted airspace. The pilot, who will be interviewed by the Secret Service, was not on the proper radio channel or following published flight guidance, Guglielmi said. The White House said there was no threat to the president or his family. |

Weekend Jubilee celebrations featuring Queen's special guest |
Now we know what is in Queen Elizabeth II's handbag. The long-time mystery was solved Saturday when the British monarch made the second star turn of her career, appearing in a mini-movie to kick off a concert celebrating her 70 years on the throne. The sketch featured the queen having a cream tea with British national treasure Paddington Bear at Buckingham Palace. After drinking all the tea and destroying the cakes, the duffle coat-wearing bear told Elizabeth how he always had a reserve supply of marmalade sandwiches with him, lifting up his red hat to reveal his favorite treat. The scene recalled the moment Elizabeth appeared as a Bond girl in a short film for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. The queen's performance with an animated bear drew laughter and loud applause from the overflow crowd at the concert outside Buckingham Palace. |
