It's Thursday, so you know what that means: tech headlines! It's Brett Molina back avoiding the June heat by delivering this week's big tech news. |
In the tech industry, to paraphrase Ron Burgundy: "I don't how to put this, but June is kind of a big deal." |
The big reason? Apple. The tech giant is virtually hosting its Worldwide Developers Conference starting with a keynote next Monday, June 6. |
It's also important to everyone who owns an iPhone because that keynote provides our first look into how our smartphone experience will change with the introduction of a new software update. In this case, it's iOS 16. |
Most of the details about iOS 16 are confined to rumors or predictions, but here's what I'd like to see added to my iPhone in the future. |
An always-on screen |
Apple already has done this with the latest models of Apple Watch, where the display is on at all times. It just makes sense to add something like this to the iPhone. Maybe I just want to quickly glance to check the time, or the weather, or whether it's actually Thursday (we've all been there). |
Make the lock screen customizable |
I love making family photos wallpaper on my lock screen, except when I have to resize the image because the time is literally sitting on someone's face. I want some options. Maybe move the clock lower on the screen, or perhaps let me add some shortcuts like we already have with the flashlight or camera for quick access so I don't have to swipe down to access the control center. I can't count how many times I would have loved to just pull up the calculator right from the lock screen. |
Better widgets |
The current widgets for iOS are great for quick-hit information, such as double checking reminders, or maybe you just want a really fun way to display your Photos app. I wish they were a little more functional. The most obvious example is a Music or Spotify widget with controls (play, forward, reverse). |
Show me battery percentage |
Before the fun camera notch made its debut on iPhones, the screen would display both the battery icon and the percentage if turned on in Settings. Because of the notch, you have to swipe from the top right corner to check the percentage. Keep it on screen at all times, please and thank you. |
What features do you want for your iPhone? Let me know on Twitter. |
What else happened in tech? |
Pokémon arriving in twos. Video game fans get a new reason to catch 'em all. The games Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet launch Nov. 18. |
Big changes at Facebook parent Meta. Chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg will leave the company this fall. |
Are you a Verizon customer? You might be paying more for your wireless bill starting this month. |
Thursday's tech tip |
If you are graduating from high school or college, or know someone who will, it's a good time to consider a late spring cleaning of social media accounts before heading to college or interviewing for that first job. Here's how to clean up your social media accounts. |
Thanks for reading! See you next week. |
